Question Crank position sensor?

Hello everyone, I am currently changing out the thermostat housing on a 01' 4.0L and am having a heck of a time. The location has so many different electrical wires running over the top of it and it leaves little to no room to remove the housing out. I have on last wire to get loose and the is the crank position sensor wire. It runs up the back side of the alternator and then over the top of thermostat housing. My question is how do I unplug this sensor. It is in a tight spot and I don't want to yank on it. Looks like there is a little wire tab that goes around the sensor or at least half way. Any help is appreciated thanks..

Are you sure it's the crank position (CKP) sensor versus the camshaft position (CMP) sensor? I can't imagine that the CKP sensor wire runs that far up on the engine without falling in to another harness....

I'm not real familiar with your particular model and year, but several connectors for critical sensors have a little red or white tab that needs to be slid away from the connector in order to allow the squeeze tab to be able to be squeezed. I'm not sure if that makes sense as written. But basically if you can get to the connector with a pocket screwdriver, see if you can pry that "wire tab" towards the wire end of the connector (away from the sensor). If so, then you should be able to squeeze the release and disconnect the plug. Once you get everything back together, be sure to slide the "wire tab" back down (toward the sensor).

I could very well be CMP however it does go all the way up and above the thermostat housing and then under the big plastic intake manifold into a wiring harness that has several other wires go into the larger harness. I will try and do what you said there isn't a lot of room to see what I am doing. I just don't want to break anything and it become more of a pain in the butt. Thanks for the reply.

It is a tight fit , but , the housing will come out without disconnecting the Crank sensor . Poor way to route it , I relocate under to front by bypass hose , when I change the housings . Just did one on my 04 Mounty .

Well I finally got the old one out and the new one on. I have about 10 or 20% of the the work left to put all the vacuum lines and stuff back on. Fingers crossed everything works, then I am going to flush the system out and replace all the coolant.
