Engine Dis-assembly. May need pointers.

I have spoken with a few of you for some pointers as this is the furthest I will have gone dis-assembling any engine.

I may have a few questions as I fumble through it, but if anyone has pointers/tips for what should be done during dis-assembly to make the assembly process easier.

I will be labeling stuff. I am pretty good about organization.
I was told to make note of the connecting rods orientation so they go back in the same way.

And these caps I was told need to be in the same place and orientation. They are stamped and labeled 1-5 front to back with a sign showing which is front.

This will be a fun learning experience! And a little on down the line have a B.A. engine to swap over.

Looks good Alex! Hope you have somewhere warm to work on it. What are your plans for it?

Thanks man! Ehhh sorta. The kerosene heater manages to get the garage up to about 30. lol

Plans are to build it from the bottom up. I would have liked to really go crazy, but after looking at the costs to fire ring it, nicer connecting rods, and crank. I have decided to keep the bottom end stock. lol just all nice and new.

Other than that I will be doing everything necessary for 600hp at the wheels. IIRC there have been numerous trucks at 600hp with stock bottom ends. For some reason my mind says its 650 or over 700 that stock starts to explode. lol

Take your time, be very careful, take pictures for yourself so you know how things go. I like doing engine work. You can text me anytime if you need something Alex.

I will be out of the norm here.

Unless you have someone helping you that has done it before(with success) you would be FAR better off having the machine shop disassemble, inspect, machine and reassemble your engine. Too many variables to go wrong for th $500 "extra" they would charge you

I don't think that's out of the norm, I think its good advice. Going for 600 hp you want everything to be good.

Too late! LOL I understand where you're coming from though. I will be taking most of the components to a shop to have them inspect it and determine what should be done. No sense spending the money on dis-assembly. And I was curious.

Heads are off, main caps, crank out, pistons etc.
All labeled with the orientation so it could go back together the same way.

gettin pretty bareee.

Question: Do you remove the socket screws on the timing gear of the cam to remove it and then I see bolts behind it to remove cam?
Do I need to remove the weird back cover to get the cam out?

I am on my break time grabbin some dinner and figured I would ask before I continue.

Oh and the guy at the shop who will be doing the inspection is my roommates uncle. He told me if I was confident enough to disassemble to save the $80 and do that then bring it in. We havent worked out a deal, but either he will assemble at the shop or I may be able to con him into doing it with me at his place or mine and then the money goes right to him.
All depends on if he has the correct stuff at his place.

Dont worry I didnt plan on throwing some bearings, o-rings, and injectors at it and hoping 600 hp came about!

Basket Case implies that everything is not organized.

I'd put the rod caps back on the rods. It's easier to loose a cap then a whole rod and piston
