Looks like we need a new topic. I am an avid catfisher, been doing it since I was 10. Wow that almost 16 years. Anyway. What is everyone favorite fish to catch and why. Also whats your favorite rod and reel combo, line strength, lure or live bait. Dead bait? Also got a technical question. What is the actual noticable difference between a 4.6:1 reel and a 4.9:1 reel? Lets see if we can get a thread that lacks fighting for a change. Hell, lets go all out. Do you prefer day or night fishing? Lake, Pond, or River? Boat or bank? Beer or no beer? Friends or loner? When you take you kids, do you fish or do you just watch them? Do you use trot lines? How do you rig them? Trolling line? Biggest fish? Kill and eat, or catch and release? Call the taxidermist? Favorite lure? Favorite memory? Running out of things....... You get the point..
I Have A Fishin Story For you:
>A young guy from Montana moves to California and goes to a big department store looking for a job.
>The manager says, "Do you have any sales experience?"
>The kid says, "Yeah, I was a salesman back home in Montana."
>Well, the boss liked the kid so he gave him the job. "You start tomorrow. I'll come down after we close and see how you did."
>His first day on the job was rough but he got through it. After the store was locked up, the boss came down. "How many sales did you make today?"
>The kid says, "One."
>The boss says, "Just one? Our sales people average 20 or 30 sales a day. How much was the sale for?"
>The kid says, "$101,237.64."
>The boss says, "$101,237.64? What the hell did you sell?"
>Kid says, "First I sold him a small fish hook. Then I sold him a medium fish hook. Then I sold him a larger fish hook. Then I sold him a new fishing rod. Then I asked him where he was going fishing and he said out at the coast, so I told him he was gonna need a boat, so we went down to the boat department and I sold him that twin engine Chris Craft. Then he said he didn't think his Honda Civic would pull it, so I took him down to the automotive department and sold him that 4X4 Blazer."
>The boss said, "A guy came in here to buy a fish hook and you sold him a boat and truck?"
>
>Kid says, "No, he came in here to buy a box of tampons for his wife and I said, 'Well, your weekend's shot, you might as well go fishing."
Berkley 6 ft rod ,Ryobi reel, and a Castmaster. I like lure fishing for rainbow trout. Sometimes I'll go pluggin' for basss. I have a couple of crawdad traps. Ever try 'crawdad chowder'. I gave it a try and it turnned out EXCELLENT ! !
Gaviota state beach pier (north of Santa Barbara, CA). I usually see dolphins, sea lions, lots of pelicans and, sometimes I even catch a fish.
Hey, Ironbelly. I've caught a few of theose Big Bear Lake trout, too (night crawlers on a 3' leader with a bobber, right off shore).
Love to fish for Albacore tuna. They fight good(So there's the fight in this thread).
I prefer my old California Customs/Sabre heavy 7 foot rod, a Penn Jigmaster reel, 20-30# test and a nice heavy chromed hook with a lively greenie anchovy for bait. If they are out there, this rig gets em every time. Nothing like the yell of "hookup" or "Color".
For boy time fishing, I sure loved fishing off Crystal Pier with my TrueTemper 7 foot light spinning rod, and my Mitchell 300. Loved catching tons of Bonita, Perch and plenty of sharks, shovelnoses and a a few Halibut and Batrays. Plus the benefit of learning and hearing old stories from a couple old salty sea dogs. Sometimes we could hear the navy ships guns practicing way out a t sea. What more could a 12 year old want.
I am about 90% salt water and I will put up with trout, and hate catfish even though I am good at it, gramps ruined me on cats.
well as yall know i never tell a fish story they are all true hee hee live in e. central FL. got lakes rivers ditches ponds st. johns river that flows north i fish a lot in st johns catfish bass brim turtles lot a mudfish yeck an assorted whatevers gators cottonmouthes lots a BIG BIG sketers use mullet guts or chicken livers for cat fish at times punch holes in cat food cans to get um chumed up at times bettlespins for brim fun to use ultralites for brim well i could go on an on will have to get back to yall just realized i gotta go fishing now
My favorite fishing is for Musky. We make one major musky fishing trip each year. In fact, we just got back, and I was skunked again by the elusive esox m.
But we caught plenty of northerns, smallmouth, crappies, largemouth, bluegills, rock bass... Well, I guess anything that puts me in the boat with a beer and a rod/reel is O.K. with me.
Favorite rod: St. Croix musky pole
Reel: Shimano Calcutta
Line: Cortland Musky Master 45lb test.
TOPWATERS Baby!!! Nothing like the crash of a big "gator" trout knocking the crap out of a topwater plug. You FL ,TX , and LA guys know what I'm talking about. Redfish will put a hurt on them too. I'm taking my 6 year old (very entertaining) son on Saturday, then my buddy and I are fishing a small tournament on Sunday. 1 Redfish, 1 Trout, 1 Flounder, all on artificials.
ALL YOU NEED
Topwater plugs 7 foot calcutta baitcaster 10lb power pro line
jerkbaits 7 foot Shimano Stradic
spoons
DOA Shrimp
bucktail jigs
Once a year for the past four summers my buds and I pack up the truck and head to the BC coast. Ten foot rod, Ambassadeur 7000 real with 40 lb. test, and some rubber squiddy-looking bait. We go and fish the Kitimat river for spring salmon; some of the locals taught us a bottom-bouncing technique that's used along the shore. The people there have always been super friendly, and the fishing has been phenomenal. Nothing like a 30 lb. salmon trying to drag you down the shoreline! We've always had an awesome time, and I think this year we're thinking of renting a boat for a day and heading to the channel to try some halibut fishing. Man, now I can't wait...
