I'm having problems with 4 injectors and my EGR cooler is leaking. Going to go right through the motor and finish bullet proofing it. Plan to do all 8 injectors not just the 4. OEM injectors are highly recommended on here. I was thinking about going with a 175cc injector and upgraded turbo (Garrett stage 1 from Sinister) and regulated fuel return system. Am I over doing my "tweaking"? Better off to leave it stock? Bought my truck new and has 150000 miles. Been very problem free until the last year, so I don't kind investing some $ into it. Would appreciate your opinions.
Thanks
Kinda opening up a can of worms in my opinion. Of course in the end, it just a matter of what you want, and what the budget allows. Just a couple of observations-I assume head studs are in the plans. Is the current turbo not boosting up like it should? More fuel = more power so going up sized on the injectors should make a seat of the pants improvement, and the regulated return will help to keep the fuel volume/pressure up on those wide open throttle runs you'll be making . I also think at that point some custom tunes would be in order to take advantage of the new hardware. I'm not sure if or who is writing tunes for your current tuner.
I may be getting old or something but I drive my truck pretty regularly and do some towing with it and have never felt like it was struggling in the power department. I like high performance stuff (currently playing with a 1985 Jaguar XJS with a small block just for something different) but my truck seems to work pretty well like it is. I would fix the coolers, freshen up the injectors (Ford remans) and hopefully enjoy another 150k mi if it were mine.
Yes was planning on doing head studs while I was in there. The power from the truck has been adequate for what I need( occasionally tow a 16000 lb trailer). I know if a few people that have upgraded the injectors on their 5.9 cummins and increased their mileage and power. The 6.0 is entirely a different beast though. Reliability is more important to me than an extra 50 hp. I was planning on a SCT tuner along with the EGR delete. Also going to add some gauges On the a pillar. The scan gauge is handy but would like a quicker visual reference for EGT, boost and maybe fuel pressure. Would there e any advantage to have. Regulated fuel return for a stock fuel delivery system( do have the blue spring upgrade)?
I have a factory boost gauge but I'm with ya on the fuel pressure and especially the EGT gauge. Very good thing to have when working the truck hard. I think the SCT is one of the "approved" tuners here. The BrandX shift on the fly models are hard on the transmission.
There are quite a few knowledgable folks here who say the factory fuel system can fail to keep up with fuel demands, especially on the back cylinders, due to dead head design. That may be true but I haven't seen any numbers to back it up. It seems to me the designers would calculate fuel demand when sizing the components and build something adequate to the task. Of course if you add a few high performance parts and tunes all bets are off. I don't thing there are any negative effects from a Quality set up and it is a piece of mind that all the injectors are being fed equally.
