Harmonic Damper Bolt Leak?

My buddy inspected my front main today. It's dry, but he said the oil is coming out of the front side of the damper from the bolt.

He said to unbolt it, pull the bolt and washer/seal, get a new washer, clean it all up and install with some silicone. Is there a procedure for this? Why would it leak out of the bolt?

Oil is likely traveling along the keyway between the balancer and crank. You don't need a new washer. Pull the bolt, clean everything, put back in with silicone and torque. You might need a flywheel holder to get proper torque.

That makes sense... Is sealant supposed to be in there and it just degraded over time? Apply sealant to the washer?

How can oil get into the keyway from the crankcase? If the keyway extended inside the front seal, it would destroy the seal.

Then why is the seal bone dry and oil is seeping out from the bolt?

The oil pump is right behind the harmonic balancer. There is not a perfect seal of the pump gear and HB to the crankshaft nose and oil can follow the key groove behind the washer.

Quote from my Ford manual: "Apply RTV Silicone Sealant F5TZ-19G204-AB or equivalent meeting Ford specification NAVSTR D15-5012 Type II to the crankshaft keyway prior to installing the crankshaft vibration damper".

That's a good question. I haven't pulled the balancer off a 7.3 so I don't know how deep the balancer bolt hole is drilled. I can't imagine it would be deep enough to reach an oil passage though. Maybe I'm wrong. If I am, certainly someone else knows for sure will post.

That makes sense. I'm sure I'll become intimately familiar with the balancer real soon; there's a good chance my engine will be coming out in the next few days : (

This implies pulling the damper then?

A good cleaning of the bolt & washer, then applying silicone to the back of the bolt head and washer will suffice. I've helped do a few HB and oil pump changes, including my own. No leaks. I do the same on a differential pinion yoke nut/washer, also.

Thanks! Not sure any of the Permatex RTV silicone I have meets the Ford spec. Will have to check. I should pick up a Ford manual on this truck.

I usually use the regular black stuff, but I was at a parts store yesterday and saw all kinds of specialty RTVs for different applications. Some were specifically designed to seal certain types of fluids.

it seems to me the Ford,IH,OEM type silacone gasket maker appears to be of higher durometer, similar to "Right Stuff" brand,I wonder if higher durometer is more durable with the greater vibrations of diesel engines ?

What is the torque spec on that bolt?

Is there a special procedure for removal and install?

Just hose everything down with brake cleaner to get all of the oil off?
