I am thinking about replacing my radio with a new double din Android headunit.
But are our vans true double din or are they that weird din and a half?
It's not a true double din one the way that others are. But if you don't use a dashkit you can put one in there. Just use the sleeve that comes with the radio. It's really an oversized din and a half. Like a din and three quarters.
Tim on second thought I have a few OEM radios----I'll measure one and post the dimensions---Moosey might be onto something here.
In the past I've used single DIN's only, haven't really had a huge interest in anything double DIN but that's not to say I couldn't become interested.
Back in just a few....................
Okay so here's a few things maybe helpful. Link shows what might be necessary in order to fit one into our dashboards. This isn't directly related to a van but still gives an idea: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...n-install.html
These photos show the largest footprint a stock radio occupies:
Looking forward to seeing if anyone wants to tackle this project!

Lol I should be on to something I install radios and mobile audio for a living ha. If I can find a double din sleeve (I know I have one somewhere) I'll also post the dimensions on here so you can make your own personal decision. But I do know from experience that the double will fit.

Well then the voice of experience speaks! Didn't know that was your trade Moosey!
Here's two more photos showing the back side of the dash board, at least the radio mounting area:
It seems a double DIN would be about 4" tall (same width 7") at least according to a Google search. Depending on what head unit you'd install this might be much easier than I ever imagined.
Moosey I have that loose dash cover so with your double DIN measurements we might see how close fitting this might be.
Just for fun I visited Crutchfield's site and according to a few warnings a double-DIN unit (ie: Pioneer AVIC-X950BH) does fit but required dashboard modifications exclude a factory unit being installed afterwards.
IF those modifications are only to the outer trim panel such as I show this wouldn't be a fatal modification at all. Those outer pieces are readily available and easily replaced for under $100.
Yes they are double dins, technically. You will have to cut the plastic trim, i used an extremely sharp box cutter. I've had double dins in all of the vans that i have owned.
here is a pic of mine, an 2008 but has the same style dash. I have had double dins in a 2002, 2003 and my current 2008
^^^That seems to be what I've discovered as well. Talking with Crutchfield and a local retailer/installer there is enough room physically for the chassis. Small trimming is necessary but nothing to disfigure the outside dash appearance.
Crutchfield does advise not using the typical chassis cage. Instead use an install kit with brackets that install directly on the unit's chassis.
Tim reading your other post WOW---that's a lot of integration you're considering. Here before I thought adding a BlueTooth-capable head unit was complicated! Hope to read more of your finished set up.
