Here are a couple of my builds from the past. I am looking forward to doing the bodywork and paint on the 65 since this one is pretty clean. I did the pictured 64 last year. I painted it springtime yellow. The body was rough but it did turn out pretty nice in the end.
I loved the 57 Belair and the 67 SS396. I built the Chevrolets back when they weren't so darn expensive. I used to hot rod and drive them everywhere. They lost a lot of fun factor driving them when the value went up . I want to give the 65 a nice paint job and not be afraid of having fun with it.
I had to take a year or so hiatus from the 65 due to a lack of funds. During the last year I painted a couple of vehicles as side jobs after work. I am also about to get started on a 82 CJ-7 as a new side job.
I decided to get the 65 rolling now by pulling the 240 and installing a spare 302 to go with the factory 3spd manual. I hope to get working on the bodywork and paint this fall. My plans later will be to install an Explorer 5.0 and C4 transmission. Here is a picture from this afternoon. I also added a motivational pictures of another 65 I copied from the internet. I hope someday mine will look half as nice! Jason
I installed the 302 in the truck a few weeks ago. The original six cylinder throttle cable was way too long. I took the V8 throttle cable from my 66 parts truck and made a bracket in order to mount everything to the intake manifold. I still have to install the radiator and sort out the wiring.
I hope to get started on the bodywork and interior as soon as I get the mechanical and wiring done. I have a coworker that is going to the Pate swap meet tomorrow. He will be looking for me some seat covers and 65 F100 fender emblems.
I managed to get a bit more done on the truck. I got the interior out and pulled the last of the aluminum grill, side trim etc. off of the truck. My co-worker came back from Pate with me some new repro seat covers. I managed to get lucky and made a local deal on some very nice factory front and rear chrome bumpers and fender badges. The above picture shows the floor shifter. I plan to go back to a column shifter later in the build. The radiator core support is straight and mostly rust free except for a small spot on the lower passenger side. I have been fighting bronchitis this week but I did manage to get the bed off. All of the bed bolts came off easy but one but. I zapped it off real quick with an electric saw. So far this teardown has been pretty smooth. I built a 64 swb a few years ago. It felt like that truck hated me because I had to cut bolts, weld, splice, the whole way. I just hope the bodywork and paint on the 65 goes as smooth as the tear down....
I like your project. My father bought a '65 short bed styleside new in February 1965. He traded in in '71 for the truck I have now, but I always liked the '65.
Thanks for the kind words. I have loved these ever since my dad bought a mint 66 cc swb from the original owner back in the early 80's. It was tan colored with the 352 and 3spd manual transmission. A cousin gave us a set of fenton magnesium rims that we had mounted and we drove the tires off of it. I still have some negative 35mm film with the truck in it but the CVS and Walmart don't have the equipment to reprint photos for this.
I hope to get back on the truck in a few days. I am afraid if I am not carful this bronchitis I have will turn into pneumonia.
I am still chugging away on the Ford. I managed to shave off the accessory hood ornament and the cab running lights. The driver's door had a tear in the metal above the arm rest. I welded up the tear and smoothed it with a little filler. The bed had some dents in the floor and I spent way too much time trying to make it presentable. I hope to start painting the truck in a few weeks if all goes well. Here are a couple of pictures of how it looks now......
With the heat and humidity this time of year the going is slow but still at it. I moved on to priming and block sanding after I removed a few scrapes and parking lot door dings.
I wanted to remove the floor shifter and to get the truck back as original. I pulled the manual column out of my 66 parts truck. The 66's column shifter and turn signal wiring harness were in good working condition so I hope it will be plug and play into the 65.
I didn't want to pay a ransom for some fender emblem inserts so I took one of my fender bezels to an acrylic plastic shop. The owner cut me out some new plastic inserts in no time. I took the new inserts to a local sign and print shop. Here's what I ended up with.
Lord willing I will get some more block sanding done this weekend and may even spray a panel or two for some motivation......
I got my block sanding finished earlier this week and went ahead and painted the Wimbleton white on the truck this morning. I still have to paint the lower front valance that dull silver color. The console has faded so I will being repainting it Rangoon red when I get to repainting the dash and steering column assembly. The black truck in the last picture with the rusty and oxidized roof belongs to a coworker. I was hoping to repaint the roof on it this weekend for him but some storms passed through this afternoon and halted that..... Yes my wife is on my tail to get this done and to clean up the carport.
I managed to strip the roof of the black Toyota and painted it. Now the owner is going to have to wax the rest of the truck to match the roof. I repainted the dash and console and noticed afterward that the driver side armrest is a shade off so I will have to paint it later to match the rest of interior. Here's a few pictures of the progress ....
