2003 6.0 EGR valve issues?

2003 6.0 EGR valve issues?
It has the original one and it blows blue smoke while starting "sometimes" and idling at stop lights "sometimes". The truck runs fine otherwise but the fuel mileage has been slowly slipping lower over the years. Was 17.5mpg when I bought it used (38k) now it is 13.5 (95k). I let it idle a lot and from what I have heard this is bad for the EGR valve. So I finally went to the Ford dealership today and bought a "remanufactured" valve for a whopping $330 (30 core charge). So I have 2 questions. 1) Can I buy this same valve elsewhere for less? and 2) What can I do to keep this valve from failing in the future.

Try White Bear Ford (formerly Tously Ford ) on line for a better price. As far as the Idle concern , a lot of guys have done the high idle mod. I believe it's for trucks with PTO. The good news is your truck is alreasd wired for it and all you have to do is connect existing wires up under the dash. Do a search for " High Idle Mod" for more info. Hope this helps. Tim

Are you sure the valve is bad, have you gotten any codes or a check engine light. Common practice here is to clean the valve with carb cleaner, only use solvent on the tip of the valve don't get any on the top electrical part. The O rings are reusable, oil lightly for install. P0405 usually means a bad valve
