I have a 94 full size, just in the past 3 weeks my brake light has come on and stayed on, everything seems normal though, any ideas? Also my cruise control has stopped working, I have not checked the fuse yet, but while I am here I thought I would ask about it as well. Any help would be appreciated - Thanks JB
Not 100% certain but if I recall correctly it sounds like a bad fluid pressure switch on the master cylinder. It tells the "idiot light" when there isn't enough pressure. If it has failed the light comes on it will subsequently disable the cruise control because that pressure switch acts as the fail-safe disengagment for the cruise control. In other words to keep the cruise from working because the braking system has a problem.
You should also check to be sure that the fluid in the master cylinder is not too low.
A shot in the dark here as well, but might it be possilbe that the contact for the E-Brake could be malfunctioning making the light come on? In other words the contact is stuck in the "E-Brake is on" position?
The dash light isn't connected to the pressure switch - that switch is ONLY for the cruise servo power. The dash light is triggered by the e-brake pedal or the MC fluid level, and doesn't affect the cruise. Diagnose them separately.
Thanks, I will diagnose them separately, the mc fluid level shoundn't be a problem, just topping off, but the pressure switch which may be affecting the cruise - is that fairly simple to replace and/or find?....is it located on top of the master cylinder itself?....thanks again for the help guys...
Yes, it's the red round switch screwed into the front of the MC on your truck. On older trucks, it was mounted to a brass block on the frame rail, but it was the same switch & had the same function.
I'm not saying that that switch is the reason your cruise doesn't work, though. You should diagnose it using the Haynes manual or Ford/Helm service CD diagrams.
