Winches

Hello,

I was looking to add a winch to my truck. I have an '11 F250 Gasser. I don't want to replace my stock bumpers. I am really looking for something that I can put in my trailer hitch, or mount to the front somehow. Anyone have any ideas? Mounting options or really good winches rated for 12k pounds?

Thanks in advance, and happy christmas!

Also, does anyone know if the power steering pump is capable of running a hydraulic winch? 6.2 Gasser power steering pump that is.

They tend to be slow but can run all day unlike the electric that can heat up
and need some cooling time in between. From what I understand from the
last time I was looking at 1995. It's not a problem. After all you not steering
at the same time that often. Also if you do need to steer you may have to
work a little harder. Look at the hydraulic winch maker and see if they list
your setup.
I did a quick Google and found this
How to choose a winch
Electric vs. Hydraulic

The only hydraulic winches on the market come from Mile Marker. They are simply a planetary winch
with a hydraulic motor that’s powered by the vehicle power steering pump. The most serious difference
is duty cycle. You can winch all day, every day with a hydraulic as long as the engine is running. On the
other hand, the electric winch can give you five minutes of full power pulling with a dead engine, but
seldom do electric winch-equipped Jeeps have the electrical system necessary for continuous use. If you
do a lot of winching, such as with farm, ranch or commercial use, a hydraulic winch will do that job forever.
For the occasional use most Jeepers subject a winch to, an electric is more than adequate. For high duty cycle
electric winching, chose a robust worm gear winch.

Hydraulic Considerations

If you are installing a Mile Marker hydraulic, step one is to completely change the power steering fluid. Use a quality fluid like Royal Purple’s Max EZ synthetic and consider a oil cooler on the return line. On older rigs, consider having the power steering pump pressure tested. If it’s half worn out, you won’t get the maximum out of your hydraulic winch. Some Jeeps come with power steering pumps on the weak side to run a hydraulic winch. That includes virtually all the newer Jeeps. The older Jeeps (CJ and YJ to ‘90) with Saginaw P-series pumps are ideal. The ’91 and up TC style pump is marginal. You can upgrade most Jeeps to a Saginaw P-series pump via Super Pump kits from AGR and others.

Enjoy

I read the same thing. I did see a setup for my specific truck on Mile Marker. But was kind of unsure. Thanks though, I appreciate it!

Post back what you do and if you get one I would like to hear more about the setup.

For use with your trailer hitch (receiver) you can use a winch tray like this one -

For the front, without replacing your stock bumper, you can get winch mount integrated into bull bars. Like these -

I have pretty much spent all day on the internet researching. I am thinking I am going to go with the Mile Marker Extreme II Mount. Its part number 50-34644 if you'd like to look it up. As for the winch itself, I am still leaning towards a hydraulic winch. If I manage to get my truck stuck, its going to be very hard to get out. So I'd want to ability to run the winch for long periods of time. But for the hole setup I'd be looking at around 2600 for a hydraulic and about 1800 for an electric 12k pound winch. Decisions, decisions.

Why a 12K-pound winch? There was a 9K on mine when I got it, and that matches the GVWR.

I've always heard and read that you want to multiple my gvwr by 1.5 to make sure your winch is strong enough to haul your stuck truck out of whatever. I'm no beginner when it comes to the off road adventures. So if I get stuck, its going to be pretty bad. I've weighed my truck and it comes in at 7200-ish pounds empty with a full tank of gas. I normally take a bunch of gear with me when I go off roading, and I want to have a bunch of 'just-in-case' capability. And if I have to work my winch at max capacity every time, it'll just wear out sooner, or snap a cable sooner. That's all.

The 9000 warn is what I have. It spools back in the fastest of any size winch. I like that about it..

A 12K winch would be ideal on these trucks but I'll likely use the 9K winch I removed from my jeep before I sold it, when my new truck arrives. To the O.P., I think the hydraulic winches are good, as long as the truck is able to run. Has anybody put the second battery tray from the diesel truck in a 6.3 truck? I thought that would be handy for an electric winch.

Winches ratings are a PIA sometimes as you have to pull most of the cable out to get the rated pull which is fun if you don't have the room...usually you just need a tug to get out of most situations. You are not lifting the weight of your truck most times its just rolling weight with some drag.. I have a good warn pulley in case I need to double the pulling capacity.

The rated capacity on many winches is for the first wrap on the spool or drum.
A Sidewinder winch may be rated at 9000 lbs on the first wrap and then 2000 lbs or so on the last.
If I were to buy a winch I would buy the highest rated capacity available.

Had the milemarker extreme mount on my ranger, nice heavy duty set up. Unless you do a lot of long winch pulls an electric one should be fine. Usually for me anyway, i only need to be pulled a few feet to get out of a mud hole or a snow stuck. Would also get a 12k for a superduty although a ****** block will help if your really stuck. Can get bigger but your getting into the military/commercial stuff.
