Hey, got a 7.3 IDI, haven't had it for a long time, new to the whole diesel thing, owned lots of gas trucks. Anyways, its been stalling out on me while driving. It'll surge, then loose power and eventually stall. With this the fuel filter light comes on at about half throttle. I've changed the fuel filter, and also have the injection pump turned up enough to get a little coal out of the pipes (Previous owner said he had turned it down for fuel economy...). Now, it feels like it airlocks, as it will fire back up, but it takes a lot of cranking, to the point where today I needed a boost from cranking so long. It seems to of gotten worse, and the tank is full to the top and its still doing it. Has an electric pump that seems to be pumping right as well. It also has a larger fuel tank, 80L, instead of the factory one. Help! Dont have a lot of knowledge on the fuel systems on these.
make certain the Epump is working by shutting off warm engine, and turn the key back on, and test fuel flow at filter head by pressing the shradder valve, (looks like valve stem of tire) fuel should flow out continually when pressed, and pump should be making noise. water in fuel tank, or contaminants could plug a fuel filter, or your may have a leak in fuel line back near tank. leaking air into system, how many mile's on IP ?
also turn the injector pump down until you get a very slight haze at full throttle.
black smoke is unburnt fuel pouring out the tail pipe, and it is not healthy for the engine. turning the injector pump up will cause extremely high exhaust gas temperatures, which in turn will melt pistons if held high for too long.
