First I would like to introduce myself, I live in CT (06811) I drive 4 min to work, which is about a hope and a skip to work. I have four young kids and love the look of the excursion. I never driven one or even sit in one , but coming from a jeep srt8, i like the feel of a SUV. I had to sell the jeep because their was not enough room in the back seat for the car seats.
So, im looking into a SUV that can seat 7-8 people and have that "bad *** look to it". Growing up i remember once a car hit 100K it was junk, it blowes my mind to see rigs with 200k or more running strong. I have a toyota AWD van for the wife, Ive looked at the durango R/T but feel its too new and would pay too much. How much is the yearly tax on a excursion? I'm not going to tow anything, mostly would be local driving, i feel maybe a road trip with all 6 of us would be in the future. So would i look at a v10 or the 7.3/6.0 V8. i have a friend who knows everything about both engines. any feed back is great... I'm looking to buy in the spring time or so. 25k range....
I would look for a V10. Perfect for short trips, wont mind the 4 miles and it will have plenty of power and space for the road trips. Dont expect much over 13-14 mpg on the highway, but bulletproof and quieter than a diesel
For way under your budget you will be able to find a nice, clean Ex with the v10, 4wd, leather. You will have money left over to resolve any items which may arise from it being an older vehicle - brakes, ball joints, basic maintenance.
With such a short commute, I would recommend the v10 over the diesel. The v10 is bulletproof, cheaper to purchase and maintain and has plenty of power to tow and haul a full load of people or items around. There were 2 weak links (if you can call them that) on the early v10's - spark plugs need to be torqued correctly and the exhaust studs tend to rust and eventually pop causing an exhaust leak. The later v10s (mid 02 - 05) only had the exhaust stud issue. Other than that - the trucks are very reliable and very robust. Good luck in your search!
