Front half of frame is narrower, but I believe the rear half is the same width. The wide beds use the same floor from 73-96, though the rest of the sheet metal is different.
I have seen older beds on newer trucks, and newer beds on older trucks. I doubt some them would have bothered doing it if it wasn't a pretty easy swap......
73-79 pickups, not counting "highboys" and cab/chassis trucks have a rear frame width of 37". Isn't that the same as 80-96?
Yes, the front half is only 34", but it widens between the cab and bed.
The trucks listed as exceptions, have 34" width front to rear.
I am sure it would not look very good. With a 87-up swap at least 90% of the body lines match, all except the curve over the rear wheel. 79 down would not match at all. Unless it was a stepside bed(that chevy's version, I can't remember what Ford called it.

Yes as mentioned in original post stepside.....flare side bed, so body lines matching up or looking good is not an issue . I just want the old stepside look with metal fenders instead of fiberglass . I will report back with some pics soon , Thanks again for everyone's input .
