Feeling Uneasy
I had my coolant drained and some other small stuff. Good news is head gaskets seemed good, bad is my tuner is still halfway hooked up still and it's causing the FICM to throw in more fuel ( hence my strange MPG). I bought the truck thinking it was fully defunct . Truck possibly needs to be rewired if the stock wires have been cut. I'm really nervous about this truck right now as replacing a head gasket would severely hurt me financially. The tuner couldnt have been on the truck for over 7K max. Its getting disconnected this week after the holiday but I hope no long term damage has resulted. What do you think of the situation? How likely is the rich fuel mix to mess anything up in the near future?

I'm not the best at computer systems but it is a Banks unit complete with pilliar gauges ( really nice unit if you ask me but I don't know if the internal engine work has been done to accompany it). The actual tuner box is located on the back of the drivers side fender under the hood. There is a sticker on the fuse box below the steering wheel that says "Banks" with a hole in it and looked to be part of a switch or something at one point. I can probably pull numbers off of it tomorrow. From the trucks history I can assume it was installed in 2012.The shop said that it is still tied into the FICM causing it to give a rich mixture but nothing else and the truck is running rich. Diesels are new to me, and don't know much about aftermarket tuners so I might have things off till I learn. Ive also heard some tuners are good ones but again I don't know much about them. My Scangauge is running off of the OBD2 port right now so no issues there.

Running rich will give you more heat, pressure and soot. If you keep you foot out of it then you should be ok.
I would call Banks and give then the part numbers and ask how to remove it. There should be a set of plugs
that go to the PCM/ECM (BTW Ford calls it a PCM) and maybe the FICM. They are a jumper type plug that
puts the Banks box in-between so it can lie to the PCM and FICM. Have a look at this image.
See the plugs and pigtails? What you do is remove the plug and place it back in the stock location.
Box gone at that point.

In looking at the Banks info. I can now see the problem.
That thing is ties in everywhere.
PCM,MAP and OBDii and I may be missing things. What poor design.
Knowing what should be where I think I could yank it out in under 2 hours.
The problem will be that your going to loose some of the Banks gauges
because it looks like they feed from the Banks box. Like I said poor design.
Can you take a photo of the box and post it so we can see the numbers?
Then maybe we can get some instructions on how to remove with out the
loss of the gauges.

Thanks for the help. That picture looks similar and from Google the tuner costs $600 too. Gauges are already non functioning and the pigtails are unplugged already. I'm glad I had to take it to the shop, is have never known it was still working. It appears to have been an adjust on the fly. I'll try to get a photo up when it's daylight. If the gauges could be working again that would be great- they are exhaust temp and boost pressure. I have a straight pipe too, not that it changes anything. In the mean time I won't be doing any races or pulling haha.

I found a edge shift on the fly tuner under the rear seat after I bought my truck. I got maybe 50k out of my tranny and it took a dump. The edge tuner fried the 3-5 shift. It had always shifted weird for me. I ended up finding a re-maned 06 tranny with 40k on it for $500. I spent another $600 in labor and fluids for the install. And ive done another 50k with zero issues since.

On the Banks website there is the manual you can download. It show's how to disconnect the unit safely. It's actually not difficult as I just did mine to put the PHP FICM tuner in(gryphon). Previous owner had it for 3 years and 2 for me with no ill effects thus far. 140,000+ miles with it in. (not the best on the transmission from what i've read but not many guys have the unit anymore) Only runs rich, and it's not that bad on #6. That switch is probably tucked up under the dash somewhere I would imagine. If you can find it switch it to #1 (stock) and that'll help set your mind at ease.

I took some pictures but I'll need to retake them in order to post them up. It looks like the selector dial switch has been cut so that's out. In the picture up top of the tuner, the right pigtail is plugged in while the left one is out. I found a fuse, if I remove it would that effect more than the tuner?
