That looks like a PERFECT way to rot out your tailgate to me. MOVING, METAL ON METAL
I see Brad the grinch is still here! Did you get a lump of coal in your stocking. How is couple of small holes going to rust out your truck, no different than a scratch up tailgate. you'll get a rusted out fenderwell before those two little holes do any damage
We put the tailgate spring on today. The install was pretty easy, but the results weren't nearly as good as the Tundra's. It can be lifted with one arm now without having to crouch down at all, so it's a nice improvement that'll make my bad wrist happy, but it's nowhere near the Tundra's finger-light tailgate.
Maybe a second spring is in order... I WILL have the laziest F-250 in the land, dammit!
sounds good, is it a tight fit?. a second one would have to be on the reverseside, I wonder if they make one?

The fit was pretty easy, but we did have to cut the rubber seal on the side (not sure if that's stock or not). The hardest part was bending the spring to get it in the hole, you'll definitely want a second person to hold the gate while you bend the spring. We also had to take the driver side tail light off so we could unbolt one of the rubber stops, not sure if it's mandatory but it made life a lot easier.
I have no idea about the second spring. It comes in the box shaped like |____|, with no tension on it, so I wonder if we could just flip it and install it on the other side.

O, you don't think that metal rod rubbing on the inside of the tailgate and inside the stake pocket would rub the paint off and start rust?
I just watched the video. It's just a torsion spring steel rod that when hate is up, it rattles around because it's in its free state. Then when you let it down, the bedside end is decent, but the gate end is twisted and pressing against thin sheet metal of the tailgate. I'd like to see a Teflon load spreader on the inside where it pushes against.
There's no adjustment on the torsion. It only can assist one amount. The only way to add capacity is to preload it more.
As far as adding another, if you watch the video you can see that the bedside end has a z bent into it to fit through the hole and stay in, that will be facing the other way and so yo can't just add it to the passenger side. You'd have to rebend the z part the other way.

I wonder if you could get inside the gate to put some extra plating?
Oh! and Brad I'll call you in 20 yrs and tell you my gate is holding up. I'm just going to smear a little grease on the rod and hole. smoke that!!
Yeah. I think a thick Teflon rub strip will increase lift capacity a little and keep the end from putting a dent in the gate and rubbing a hole in it or rubbing and rusting.

awesome idea! were do you think you could get some teflon? you know come to think of it, I think my 78 bronco has some kind of factory assist on that tailgate, I will have to dig it out of storage and have a look at that.

got my hoppy tailgate assist today. It looks pretty flimzy for my two ton tailgate. well we will see how it works when I get it on. I'll post the results
girly man here! I got the hoppy tailgate assist on, and it works great. I would say it seems to weight about the same as a new truck tailgate now. you can lift it with ease and lower it with one hand easily. It fits in quit clean. It did take two of us to get the gate back on with alittle bit of manovering. I would recommened it, if tailgate weight is an issue for you, can't go wrong for 20 bucks
