Back when I had my '80 F-100 I was in the boonies of New Hampshire when my radiator popped a leak and dumped most of my antifreeze. Nobody around to help and before I had a cell phone I found an apple tree, cut an apple in half shoved into both halves inti each side of the radiator, found a large puddle and refilled the radiator, left the radiator cap loose, I drove it that way for a week before my mechanic could get time to work on it.
Love it! I have an idea what the vice-grips in the OP was doing. But anyhow, I remember "fixing" a blown rear brake cylinder by smashing the metal brake line with a rock found on the trail then borrowing a vice-grip to use as a clamp until I drove the 1,100 miles home where I could fix it properly. Its not as good a Grog's story though.
Hey GreySreak, Thanks for the compliment. Your story reminded me of when a buddy of mine had a similar problem He was driving an old GMC box truck loaded down with about 1000 lbs of meat. He didnt have any tools with him and I couldnt get to him at the time so I told him to break off the brake line by just wiggling it back and forth and then bend it over to seal it. he managed to get the truck back to his farm and then over to his mechanic to get it fixed.
I have noticed over the years that nessesity is definately the mother of invention.
The more you need something that you dont have, the more creative the fix!
