Intacke heater question

Anybody played with the intake heater to help with cold starts? I'm thinking of putting in my older diesel. Because I can't always plug them in, And I know enough people that have burnt diesels up by leaving them plugged in all the time.

How big are they?
How hot can they get?
Can they run as long as a glow plug.

The block heater cord can short out and light what ever flammable.
That is why it's a good idea to have a timer, or only plug it in before starting.
Most block heater cords don't have very thick insulation.

The trend here seems to be to disconnect the intake heater and not worry about it. A good working set of glow plugs are all that's needed to get it started in the cold.

I'm not sure how much that small heater can do by itself since it's designed to work with the glow plug system.

If you want to preheat the engine before starting, look into a diesel fired preheater.

Espar - Hydronic MII Coolant Heater - Eberspächer

Here's a link to the ones we use in some of our equipment. The D10, is a 10kW unit and is used in a 8L engine. Heats the engine and the cab up very nicely.

On the 7.3 models, the Air Intake Heater is specifically designed to work SEPARATELY from the glow plug system.

(The 4.5 liter V6 is different, on that model the two systems do work together...)

To the OP's question....
The Air Intake Heater is not effective enough to start these trucks in cold weather. You would need a heating grid like the Cummins engines have. Those grids would need to be as close to the intake valves as possible so you would need one for each side. Now that billet intake plenums are available, it wouldn't take too much additional effort to fit a grid heater on each bank.

I prefer the grid heater vs glow plug system myself....they seem to work much better in my region. However, the glow plug system works well enough on our 7.3 trucks that we leave them alone. (Why change something that works?)

Our 4.5 liter trucks do NOT like starting up when cold. The glow plug/AIH system is not working for us so we have to leave those trucks plugged in with block heaters. We put them on a timer and we jacketed the block heater cord. If the cord shorts out, then it will blow a fuse on the timer and shut off the power.

To reduce white smoke during long idle periods at low ambient temperatures, the PCM will activate the intake air heater. Specific conditions must be present before the heater is activated:
ambient temperature must be below 0°C (32°F)
engine oil temperature (EOT) must be below 55°C (131°F)
vehicle power (IVPWR) must be between 11.8 and 15.0 volts
parking brake must be applied on manual transmission vehicles
the transmission must be in PARK or NEUTRAL on automatic transmission vehicles
glow plugs must be off
I found this blurb on how the AIH works, or when it works. Doesn't sound like it was designed as a starting aid. I thought it came on with the glow plugs, but looks like it comes on after.

Thanks for the link
I was looking at hook the heater up with the glow plugs to help with starting, my old truck is a little short on compression when it's cold
