Block heater

I have a question about the block heater.

One of my friends told me he ALWAYS leaves his 6.0 plugged up in the winter. It helps it warm up faster.........."which I agree with him on" and it allows the glow plugs to last longer which will not strain them. Is that true?
I have always figured to plug it up the night before instead of leaving it plugged up all week.
Is there any more benefits to leaving it plugged up? What exactly does it to when you leave it plugged up?

Thanks in advance!

I only plug mine in when I'll be using it the next morning. Most weekends, I'm not up early enough to worry about temp this time of year. It's staying warmer now than back in Dec. & Jan. Another month or so, I wont be plugging it in at all.

As far as saving on the glow plugs? Well, they work less when plugged in, so yes, it should prolong their life. How long? Who knows, one can just go out. Not worried about saving them.

I like the frost free wind shield though, if I remember to set heater on defrost and temp cranked up.

The glow plugs are pretty much bullet proof and it never hurts to plug the truck in "if" it gets cold out Zero isn't cold around here.

I plug mine in every night with a timer. 4hr every night for the winter. 2-3 in the summer. It is a really good idea to get a block heater. Even if it is for only an hour it still helps with start up.

And yes it will save the life of the gloplugs and the components that follow them.

Also with a block heater you wont be driving around on cold start programing saving the eng and mpg. The heat also transfers to the steering system, the cab on cold mornings, instant heat for the heater, and especialy the transmission that also saves cold opperation abuse.
