So I am in desperate need of new tires on my 64 F100. My original thought was to replace the tires and keep the factory 15" wheels. Then I got to thinking about going for larger rims, say 17" or 18", and something a little wider.
My questions are, how wide are the stock 15" rims? 7" wide?
Secondly, what is a good plus size rim for a slick? More importantly, what width and backspacing? If I get new rims, I want to go big enough to fit a disc brake conversion easily, if I decide to go that route in the future.
I am not too concerned with keeping a factory original look, and do plan to lower the truck some, but not too crazy. Thanks.
get some white spoke 16" they are about $90 or so each and then you can run up to 265 75 16's on back with no rubbing issues plus they look pretty good and i run 245 75 16's on front cheapest wheels you can just buy and they are tough with decent looks or at least i think so
I went with these on my 66 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/br...5537/overview/
with 265/70/15's,,, I love the full wheel well look and have had a billion compliments on them,,, I would not go with 17's,,, 16's yes, lots of sizes available.
These are 15x8's and they were actually priced good, I think it was around 120 a wheel... and they came with lug nuts.

I just did the disc conversion on stock beams. Find yourself a set of Ford steelies off a disc brake F100. They have 3-3/4" backspacing. I'm running 225/75/15 tires up front. Rims are 5.5" wide.
15x7 is the largest wheel I'd run on a lowered slick. 4" backspacing is doable as well if going to aftermarket wheels.
Some Dodge Vans and Trailblazers ran 15x6.5 wheels, they look exactly like out F100 wheels, just wider. Some 80s-90s Ford vans had 15x6 wheels.
You can find them in salvage yards fairly easy. I was in one yard and there was a complete set of four spares in Trailblazers that looked like they had never been on the ground. I had the econo car and couldn't haul them.

Some Fords and Dodges also came with 15x8 rims. Some in aluminum

Thank you, this is what I am looking for. Can you elaborate on why not to go bigger than 15x7? What clearance issues do you run into? Is the width the problem, or diameter of rim?
I have also been kicking around the idea of going with wider rims/tires in the back. Maybe 8" or even 9" wide? Any input on this?

The width is the problem up front from what I've been told. I believe it's when you turn that there can be rubbing. Some guys are running 8's up front with custom offsets but I wouldn't try it personally. Steering is hard enough with my narrow rims and tires.
I just ordered 8" wide steelies for the rear from Wheels Vintique. I'll be running 275/60/15 tires.
Lots of guys are running 15x8s up front with 4 in BS with no problems. After nearly 50 years things wear and sag so depending on the condition of your front end some rubbing could occur.
