Hello all,
I have a 2004 f250 with some front end troubles. When turning right once in a while it will make a hard CLUNK noise and then trying to drive down the street it drifts over to the left and I pull the wheel back to the right and when I turn the wheel it feels like I like theres something hitting somthing else in the front end. I have checked ball joints and tie rods and they are all nice and tight. Some stuff I have done that probably isn't related to my problem is shocks and sway bar end links. Any ideas on what this could be? Hopefully not the steering box!
Did you get this problem figured out? I have a simular problem with the truck randomly drifting to the left or the right. No clucking noise but it definatly randomly will do that and I will have to over correct an then jerk the wheel back again until I can get control of it again. Kinda scarey sometimes when it decides to do it.
Might want to check you hub assemblies too. If the needle bearings and/or wheel bearings inside the assembly go bad you can get a lot of up and down movement in the axle and u joint. Mine was so bad the u joint was hitting the steering knuckle if I hit a bump and causing similar symptoms as you are experiencing. Since you will have it all apart anyway it is worth it to checking the hub assembly and replacing all three seals if they show any wear. FYI, the hub assembly is about $300 which you will need if the wheel bearing is bad but if you just need to replace the needle bearing it can by R&R'd at home and the part is only $6 online.
