4R44E shift cable

Hi guys, I bought a 2000 Ranger 4x4 3.0L auto today from the neighbor guy sight unseen with a "bad tranny" for $400. I'm very unfamiliar with the Ranger family so please bear with me, but long story short:

When moving the shift lever, the trans doesn't engage. It needs to be engaged from underneath. Do the cables tend to stretch, or break? I can't find any adjustment on it anywhere. Any help would be great! Thanks

Does the shift lever on the tranny move at all when you move the shift lever on the column?

No it doesn't.. I took the cable out today and dissected it- turns out it's broken by the exhaust where that braided sleeve is; I assume a new cable should put it back on the road. Thanks!

Interesting... this might be the first time I heard about a broken shift cable on a Ranger.

Just an FYI, the Ford Manual says the cable should be adjusted after it's replaced.

Let us know how you make out.

It shudders between neutral and reverse like it's engaging but then doesn't move or even feel like it wants to. Almost seems like a linkage issue again since it shudders, but me and trannies don't get along so well.. Any input?
