Looking at an 84

I might be purchasing an 84 F150 stepside. 300/6 automatic. Supposed to have 59,000 original. I had an 80, and an 86, both F250's. They were great trucks.
Anything I need to look for, when inspecting it? I know the oil pan rust issues, and my 86 300/6 ate the fiber timing gear.

I don't know about oil pan rust issues, but you should look for rust above the wheel wells, in the cab corners (take a strong flashlight), in the cab floors, and on the frame. And look for hacks in the wiring and emissions equipment. Hacks in either mean the PO didn't do things "right" and may well have scrimped on other things.

Check the play in the steering linkage, which should be minimal if those miles are accurate. Drive it ove some bumps and listen for thumps under the driver's or passenger's feet. They indicate the bushings are gone on the radius arms.

1984 was the 1st year [for 49 state models] with the 4.9L having the feedback system. This is where the carburetor and distributor are controlled by the computer. This system is great when working properly. However, if anyone has removed sensors or vacuum lines, the system defaults to a "safe" or "limp home" mode... this will hurt performance as well as gas mileage.

Check to see if the system is still in place. Look at the distributor and see if it has a vacuum line going to it? If the feedback carburetor is still in use, it will have several wires going to it, not just the one going to the choke housing.

There is some rust, at the cab corners, and the bottoms of the front fenders. But he has a new set of fenders that go with it.

Thanks, guys, I'm supposed to look at it next week.
