Alternator charging issue

Alternator charging issue
HI guys - 91 Bronc 5.0 auto trans auto hubs
I just had the engine replaced - I bought the beater with a rod knocking & had a local shade tree drop in a junk yard replacement.
Lucky for me the JY engine had been rebuilt - it runs strong.
BUT.....you get what you pay for.
The alternator does not charge at all. I found a broken thingy & I'm not sure what it is.
The wire harness plugs into the bottom of the alternator. About 6 inches down the line the harness splits into a Y & about 6 inches up the other side of the Y is a plug.
That plug believe it or not is still plugged into something broken & smashed. I can't see where it should go or what it should be attached to.
Any help will be appreciated. I can get pictures later.
