Howdy fella's, I just broke in the cam on "Blue Blossom" and I am having an idle problem. It started fine, I cranked up the idle to 2000 rpm let it rock and roll for twenty minutes, then turned it down to about 700. It idles rough and speratic. The motor is balanced, no vacuum leaks, timing is steady at 12, carter afb, cam is .510/286, pertronics ignitor. This problem existed at first fire up, but cleared after I turned up the idle, It revs great, sounds great, just idles crappy. Should I hook up the ignitor to 12v instead of 6.9v? Is the carb to blame? This is my sixthe FE build, and my 9th Ford build. I've never had this problem, I wish I had another carb to try. Any ideas to smooth this monster out?
Pertronix likes 12V. Check the plugs, maybe open the gap a bit to about 0.50. Check for a vacuum leak using an unlit propane torch. I'd check the firing order once more. I thought my truck was not idling properly, turns out it was the lopey cam and a new exhaust system. Runs like a Hoss!
See what happens when you crank up the intial advance. My cam is bigger, but it likes the higher initial advance. It may not be a good solution, but may help diagnose the problem.
I stole the AFB of my buddies galaxie, found the problem. Bad carb. I'm not sure exactly what is wrong with the carb, probably my fault at the rebuilding bench. Boy this thing runs like a top!
