I would not recommend a VW. Parts are more expensive and IMO not nearly as easy to work on. If you need to haul heavy loads get a 3/4 ton and sell the I6. I say GAS all the way again because they're IMO easier to work on and cheaper. When I was looking for my newest truck a few months ago Diesels F250's were easily twice the price of gas. For the condition and miles my truck has and I only paid 3g's would have cost me at least 8 in diesel! That's not counting the higher price of fuel!
My parents have had several rangers, and my cousin has one as well and I must say they are reliable as any vehicle I can recall. My parents recent one is a 99 and gets great fuel mileage for a 4x4 and its not a 4 banger. I'm not sure if they made the rangers in 4x4 with a 4 banger?
i checked insurance, an extra 20 to 35 bucks to add another vehicle with just liability, and extra 60 bucks for liability and some more
$20 - $30 for how long? And what insurance company? It costs me an extra $250 every 6 months to add my Bronco to my insurance (liability only). If you only need to pay an extra $30 for 6 months I need to look for a different policy. (Or at least I do after my 18 and 19 year old kids are off my policy. I don't think I want to switch right now.)
That does sound really cheap. When i talked to our insurance guy he told me it would cost about what my truck does each month. I depended on what I bought.

no that is per month, i dont know why he gave me a price per month instead of every 6
I sure if I did that I would get almost 30 with my ranger IF I didn't get run off the road due to being a traffic hazard
this is rural iowa, i am no more of a hazard than the tractors going 15 mph, also the speed limit is 55, so not that far off that and you would be hard presses to find a car behind you no matter what. there are no freeways or interstates here and the closest one has a limit of 65 mph. besides if people ride me real close or are a-holes about me going 5 mph slower i hit the breaks until the speedo reads 35 mph, good amount of hills where i drive so they usually cant pass till we get to town, now if someone is nice and stays behind me a reasonable distance and they are in a hurry i will speed up to 55

That seems reasonable for an inexpensive car (I know my Bronco costs more to insure than my sons Buick LeSabre). You just need to figure out if you'll save at least $30 - $40 / month on gas to outweigh insurance and minimal maintenance on a 2nd vehicle.
Every time I've looked into it I've just decided to drive the big truck, although I do prefer small blocks to get slightly better mileage during 98% of my driving and accepting being a little underpowered in the other 2%.
