fuel issue

fuel issue

My 1999 mercury mountaineer won't start and it is soaked in gas by the back tire frame area.....need help asap.....its got a 4.0 and its 4wd

sounds to me like the fuel pickup tube (I think is the name) is rotted out.

I replaced mine last year..or maybe a little longer ago.

The tube was rotted out right close to where it goes into the tank.

That tube is fairly easy to replace but it is all one piece and best to buy new from the dealer is what I found.

my guess it could be a factor. Check the fuel cutoff switch as well in the back panel by the jack. I think the cutoff is there or the other side.

That part was a couple of hundred if I recall. May or may not be your issue but check that and the cutoff.

OK cause it was running then it started hickuping and now it stumbles and dies I put gas in almost 5 gallons and it didnf even give me a quarter of a tank like it normally does

Now there is no smell of fuel and it still won't start it stumbles and dies the throttle position senser is bad to idk if that could cause it

If the fuel line running to the tank is rotted, it may be sucking some air instead of just fuel.

I'm not seeing any fuel on the ground at all and it says I have a quarter tank .....would the throttle position sensor cause it to not start?
