I had to replace the main computer in my '92 F150 4wd 300/6 a few months ago. Engine started running like it had water in the gas...spitting, sputtering and not wanting to idle. Checked codes and recieved a pass code, 3 EGR valve malfunction codes and transmission (E4OD) trouble codes. Got to thinking...what in the hell is going on???? Checked the forum and discovered this model year computer had crappy capacitors....pulled the original computer out, and sure enough, 3 of the blue capacitors had corroded and broken wires.
Called my local NAPA warehouse with the calibration # on the bad computer and they had one (rebuilt) in stock for about $90.00. Rushed down and got that joker and installed it. HOLY CRAP!!! Truck NEVER ran so good as it did after the install. I was LUCKY to get 12.5 mpg since day one with this truck. Now, I am getting about 17 mpg and plenty of power and torque! I use this truck to tow a heavy tandem trailer with a '55 Ford 660 tractor on it and for hunting. No speed demon but it gets the job done. Geared a bit high though..3.08. I would eventually like to put 3.73 gears in ol' blackie, but money is too tight right now. Will do the change IF and when to 3.08's decide to take a dump. 159K and still going strong!
Also I put a towing cam in this truck about 8 years ago, so that helps with the power and torque.
Just an FYI if yours starts runnng like crap and the mileage sucks!
