I have a 92 econoline 150 it runs smooth and great but seems to have alot of lifter noise is there a adjustment for this ? it runs smooth holds a good idle and gets great gas mileage has good power and oil pressure too this a conversion van i just put the moter in a month ago the noise is killing me sounds like a diesel thanks for your help
Unless someone put solid lifters in that motor before you got it, I'd say the lifters are not getting pumped up with oil. Maybe you could try putting some engine flush through it and see if it starts to quiet down a little.
A little trick we used to do years ago was drain out a quart of oil and put about a quart of tranny fluid in the crankcase. We'd let it idle for a while and rev it up a few times. and sometimes drive it to the store and back and then change the oil and filter.
Is it a new, rebuilt, or used engine? I would be checking the oil pressure with a gauge. How many miles? It may just need the valve tightened down. Or the timing could be off, should be set at 10 dbtdc.
When I had a lifter that was making that dreaded "tika..tika..tika" sound I put a quart of mystery oil through it, drove it for about 30-45 min. Then I drained the oil, changed the filter, and replaced the oil with diesel engine oil. The diesel oil has a little better detergent properties than reg motor oil. I ran it the usual 3k and then switched back to a synthetic blend.
It must have worked, the noise went away, and has not returned for a year. That will vewry soon be crossed completely off of my worry list. My van is getting a new cam and lifters, along with headers, carb, intake, timing gears/chain, and water pump this week.
well i just got the van and its seems to be getting louder sometimes ill have to get a good oil pressure guage on it.The stock one says im within specs though. I put lucas oil treatment in it and thats when the noise got little louder not shure thought that was supposed to quite things down going to try to flush it this weekend timing seems to be right on havent put a light on it yet but it seems to have good power and starts good . it is a used engine out of a crown vic not shur if it sat for awhile it burns clean no smoke or funky oder. The noise is the only thing that bothers me other than that this thing is great.
well i talked to the guy that put the engine in and he told me that the engine was out of a crown vic and sat for about two years . he also told me that the guy he got it from is a family friend and it was a real quiet and reliable engine he put it in and drove it for about a 1000 miles before i got it.not shure want to try as little as possible without tearing into you know its tight in the engine compartment. any ideas will be greatly appreciated im new to fords still learning. sounds like the rockers are real loose klak klak klak louder when i get to the upper rpms sometimes after driving for awile its seems to quite down when the oil gets real hot and pressure is on it oh yeah the engine has about 65000 on it car was hit in the rear and totalled said it never made noise even after it was hit thats why he saved the moter.
No planning on doing that this weekend in the case that i have to replace the oil pump will the oil pan come off without lifting the engine? where is the best place to hook up the mechanical guage where the sending unit is? or is there a place close to the top of the engine? thanks for your help
The easiest place is where the sending unit is now. No you can't get the oil pan off without lifting the engine. I've found the best way to lift it is to get a good floor jack, a short 4x4 (~12 inches), and a come-a-long. Hook the come-a-long to the front axle on the jack, then to the rear axle on the van, the position the jack so that the cradle is under the harmonic balancer, pump the jack up until the 4x4 gets some pressure on it againts the balancer. Carefully lift the engine, and use the come-a-long to keep the jack in place. I've replaces the oil pan on a 351 this way, it comes out a LOT easier that in goes back in. You can also replace bearings and the oil pump from there. You will have to remove the pickup tube from the oil pump before pulling the pan out, then reinstall the pick up blind...... It's not difficult, but is time intensive.
I have what sounds like a lifter noise (tick tick tick, raises with higher RPM) coming from my 351W EFI. I thought that it was a sticky lifter so I tried the "mystery oil" route to flush the system. The noise was still there, that's when I tried looking around for other sources for the noise.
Probing around with a stethascope lead me to belive that the noise is coming from the EFI system. The noise is real loud on the high pressure rails and injectors. I haven't had any problems with the engine and it runs pretty good. I have around 74k on it. I was thinking about trying one of those injector cleaning kits this year.
I guess that there is still a possibility that it could be a lifter or rocker arm, but I am hesitant to start dissassembling the family hauler, while it is running good, without knowing for sure.
well here we go im not going to be doing much this weekend becouse the other night a gave it a good floggin i drove the **** out of it hard and believe it or not the noise quited down alot and stayed quite not shure what happened its a wander what a little temper tantrem will do but ill let you guys know if i find out what happenens next now i have to focus on the wiper relay think its goig out now wipers acting a funky thanks for all your help
