Hello guys- New user here- To start on a positive note, ya'll are a wealth of knowledge here- great site--
Problem- I have noticed tiny specks of rust in the paint of my silver '02- The specks seem like someone hit the paint with a needle all over the horizontal surfaces (roof, hood, top of fender, etc.)- The local dealer says it is 'fallout' from stuff in the air, gets on the paint and rusts- He said because it is more than a year old, Ford will not warranty it- Is the dealer full of it? To me this is BS!- He said he could rub a clay bar all over the truck to remove it-but would this remove the clearcoat? And if it is on the surface like he says, then why didn't waxing remove it? Anyone else heard of this problem? The dealer made it sound so matter of fact, but if it is this common of a problem, (1) why have I not heard of it, (2) why has it not happened to other cars/ trucks? (3) why hasn't Ford corrected it?
I have heard of the train car/ metal flying off the wheels issue and this is not the case- I did a search about paint and didn't find anything but it could be chalked up to operator error in the search function--
I had a friend that has a 1999 ford sd and we work at a Air Force base. While we was at work a contractor sprayed a water tower with tan paint cut heavy with mek and overspray went all over his truck. He was told to wash the truck with dawn detergent to remove the wax and then use the clay with a quick detail waspray tpye) keeping it wet. Meguiar makes a clay detail kit. It takes a long time but its worth it. Then wax the truck with liquid wabrand they recomended). Auto zone has all the stuff you need. I try to do this to my truck once a year and it never seemed to hurt the clear coat. hope this helps. good luck!!
1999 Ford F-250 sd, ext cab, Lb, 4x4 V-10, Amber colored, auto-meter gauges, trans temp, oil, water temp, leveled w/285s, power aide, chipped, K & N system, tricumulator and sonnax, magna flow muffler, 3 inch exhaust exits out in front of the rear tires.
I had the same thing happen to my truck. I was told that you could use a polising compound and wax them out.. I did try it and it worked really well. Now I keep an eye out for them.. Hopefully I won't have much more.. I don't know how Ford could really fix somthing that is really outside thier control. Just a thought.
What you have sounds like maybe metal in the paint or metal filings from a grinder. Can't say for sure without seeing the defect.
If its pin ****** all the way to the metal which I doubt then you would be having rust creeping under the paint. My guess is that it is something on the surface maybe even embeded in the clear coat. My 2 cents
Thanks guys- After reading my own post I guess I was still too worked up after being at the dealer and sounded too excited--
The confusing part is that if it is surface rust, then why does it not come off when hit by the clay bar? (It would also take a week to go over the whole truck with this method!) I put in a lot of elbow grease on it and it still does not come off. Also, if the rust is only on the surface and beyond the control of the factory, then why would they warranty it at all? They just said that I was out of the 1 year paint warranty by a couple of months. I still have over a year and a half on my standard warranty. Back to the problem, it just does not seem to be only on the surface. The rust dots seem to be under the clearcoat, are definitly rust, and are just beginning to show. They are not bubbling up (yet?) like the other post on the subject. I guess I should just be happy for that!--
Ok i have this same problem on my girls Mustang. I found out that those are from the molten hot specs of metal that come off the Train's brakes while transporting. You thing that they would start protecting the cars a little better to avoid this problem.
Funny thing! I have a 2000 F250 and am having paint cracking problems on the roof. I brought it to the dealer and they told me I was past my "3 year / 30000 mile warranty". Your dealer says 1 year warranty? Have you gotten the problem fixed? Do a search in this forum and just put "paint". You will see the amount of people that are having problems with Ford fixing the paint problems!! E-mail Dateline @ dateline@nbc.com Tell them your story. They are intrested in how many preople are having the same problem.
I have a 01 f-250 4x4 sdsc v-10 (true blue) with 18,000 miles and have noticed the same cracking on my roof. Under closer examination I found rust spots on the side of the bed,and tailgate as well.
Aftrer bringing it to a dealership , the body shop manager told me it was from the rail car and to wait a while longer to see if any more came out so they could paint it all at once.
I was surprised at the ease of the conversation, but of course I did not buy a new truck to paint it.
So now I am waiting to pickup my 03 f-350 power stroke sdsc 4x4 in silver this afternoon.
Of course this is NOT the solution to the underlying paint issue, but i really wanted the 7.3 powerstroke anyway and there are not to many left
kjw84fxr Thanks for the reply. I ask that you please please please please e-mail dateline to let them know that you also had the same problem. Just put "Ford factory paint defect". Luckily you were still in warranty range so they really couldn't give you too much Bull. Who knows your new one may develop them. Not that I am trying to hex you or anything!! Thanks for your help!!
what you have in your paint is commonly know as "rail rust" . it is caused from the vehicle not being protected while in transit on a train. i have worked at a Ford dealership for about six years and the solution that ford has is this:
1) wash vehicle
2) wash vehicle with an acid solution (seperate bucket)
3) rinse vehicle
4) wash vehicle with acid neutralizer (seperate bucket)
5) rinse vehicle
6) wash vehicle with a detail wash (seperate bucket)
7) rinse vehicle
8) wash vehicle using standard soap
9) clay bar vehicle (clay bar/soapy water)
10) wash vehicle and dry.
11) buff vehicle with a machine glaze to remove scratches from clay bar
12) wax vehicle
as far as i know, we only did 2 cars with this method. industrial fallout was not a problem where i live and rail rust was a rare occurence. the process listed above takes about 10-12 hours and should be done in the same day. there is a tsb about this somewhere but i couldnt find it. i know we got the part numbers for the acid/nuetralizer/detail washes from a tsb.
Jiggers,Dateline has been notified..... Good Luck to anyone who has this problem, I am sure I am not done with ford as well .The new one probally has issues as well
