On my new to me F250 that I just bought I noticed the belts squeal when the engine is first started until it warms up good. Other than that its all good. The truck has 202K on it now and I'm still trying to find a service book. When and how can I tell if they need to be changed out?
Thanks
Good luck on fixing that squeal. I had mine into the dealer 4 times over several years for the exact same thing (under warranty). After the second belt still made noise (like yours, only when stone cold), they said they had a "bad run" of belts. Another winter and there it is again -- last time I had it in they did the tensioner and belt and it still squeaks when cold. But only winter cold, it's quiet in summer, and only on first start, once warm it's all quiet.
If it bugs me enough this winter I think I'll try a Gates or Goodyear belt and see what happens -- you might want to try that right off the bat, as all of mine were factory ford belts...
That's exactly what mine does, once its started up its never made any noise. I'll order a gates belt and see what happens. I haven't looked into the procedure to change them out yet, how many should I change out? Would using some belt glaze stop squeak hurt anything?
A lot of people have had good luck with the Goodyear Gatorbacks.
I like the design of the Gatorbacks -- I put one on the Expy when I did the Alt. Only thing is.... Is that it makes it's own noise -- kind of a whirr/whine, you really only hear it at idle, and I doubt you'd even notice it on a 6.0....
