I have a 94 f150 with an E4OD and a 5.0 V8. It is just a complete dog. I realize that its a pickup truck but its horrible. Are there any common problems with this year 5.0 (ie clogged cat, sensor issues). I know its a really open ended question but I thought I would try.
BTW I did a tune up about 10k miles ago. (plugs, wires, cap & rotor, air filter, belt)
I'm not really sure what you consider being a complete dog, but I get plenty of acceleration out of my '90 5.0. I have the AOD which isn't supposed to be that great but i get decent acceleration from it. I only have to mods that really matter: an edelbrock intake manifold and a glasspack muffler. I've heard that all catalytic converters like to clog but there is no way to know for sure. You may want to check the timing on your engine. What kind of mileage are you getting? Mine gets 14.4mpg. I had to readjust the timing after i installed the new intake. I was only getting about 10mpg before i reset the timing and the engine wouldn't accelerate well for anything. The intake also added a noticeable amount of power after the timing was set. There are quite a few options to help add power to the 5.0. I have found headers, cat back exhaust, computer chips, perfomance catalytic converters, and even superchargers.
Yup check your timing. You may be headed in the right direction with the plugging cat. When I got my truck I presumed that this was all a 5.0 has till I had my exaust done and they showed me how plugged and melted the honey comb was after they gutted the cats. Theres a pretty long steep hill on the way home and I pulled it faster with the camper on than I had ever done empty. Made me realize there was hope for a 5.0 after all.
hey dave i have a 1994 f150 and it is also a dog.i put a glasspack on it and there was no difference.i went over a friends house and he told me to check my cats.i have 224,000 on my motor so thats why i thinks thats where my problem is!my truck dont blow any smoke or burn any oil and my compression is fine in all cylinders.did you ever figure out what was the problem?
Nope, haven't had a chance to figure it out yet. Hopefully next weekend I will get a chance to check the timing. If that's not it I am going to replace the cats. There is a new catback dual exhaust on the truck but I didn't put it on so I don't know if anyone looked at the cats. Once I figure it out i'll let you know.
i had the same problem with my '95 5.0. It wouldn't even crawl out of a small ditch. I drilled out both the cats and had a great improvement in power. That happened around 130,000 miles.
I've thought of drilling out my cats but i was wondering if it would screw up the 02 sensor on the front cat if i was to drill that one out too. I had planned on just drilling the back one out but I'm unsure. thanks for any help.
If the sensor is in front of the cat it wouldn't affect it. You'd be better off (legally anyway) replacing what is on the truck with a good high flow cat and keeping it legal.
