oil filter

My first oil change is coming up, probably in a week or two.

What's the best kind of oil/oil filters for a '91 f-150 with a inline six?

Thanks!

I always buy Motorcraft. You may want to search the Oil and lubrication forum below. There was discussion on oil filters I think last year and there may be a link to a big oil filter study.

Based on both numerous people's research on the 'net, and my follow up cutting apart of filters, stay away from Fram. Yeah, I know the orange case looks pretty, but it's a cheap excuse for a filter inside. (and perhaps that's the only thing the people in the Oil and Lubrication forum can agree on.)

Motorcraft, Purolator, Mobil 1, Purolator Pure 1, AC Delco (good filter even for the Fords believe it or not) are all good filters. I use Purolator Pure 1's on my vehicles now.

GammaDriver: Do you know who makes Motorcraft filters? I thought I once read that Purolator makes them. If so which Purolator is it?

I went back to changing my own oil after my mechanic was putting these "Champ" filters on. I assume they are good or he would not use them, but always feel better with Motorcraft.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Jun-02 AT 10:57 AM (EST)]No, TallPaul, I don't know who makes it. Purolator is probably a good guess though. The strange thing I've found about actual branded "Purolator" filters and the filters they make under other names, or for different companies, is that when looking at the intake holes around the main threaded hole, they often times do not look the same - even for two filters that fit the same vehicle (for example, like a Purolator and a Group 7 filter for a 1990 Mazda 626). I'm talking round, to oval, to semi-rectangular holes for filters that fit the same vehicle.

I can't believe Purolator would go through the tooling & buying of machines just to make different holes... so I'm almost thinking that other comapnies use Purolator's internals (since they are a 'filter' maker - which means the filtration media) and they put them in their own cases, or Purolator contracts out some of the jobs. So I'm not sure if we can call some of them true "Purolator" filters since the cases and bases (which, admittedly, may not matter much), and perhaps the anti-drainback seals, might be made by other companies.

The way to really know if it's a Purolator is to cut it apart and look for the string around the filter (unless it uses the Pure 1 media).

You know, I just took a Motorcraft off at the shop the other day, but I forgot to cut it apart after I drained it. Next time I'll cut one up. (I do believe I've cut one up before, but I can't remember... I should start keeping logs of my stupid activities)

I use all AMSOIL stuff in my trucks. Their SDF (Super Duty Filter) provide superior filtration (sub-5 micron) and are constructed of a stamped steel case and have an anti-drainback valve which keeps the dirty oil in the filter, especially during a change. :-) The "off the shelf" filters that others have mentioned typically filter your oil to about the 25 micron level. 60% of all engine wear is caused by particles smaller than 20 microns. So, most of the standard filters do very little to address the particles that are really doing the bulk of damage.

Oh, one other thing, if you switch to the AMSOIL filters, you must use a synthetic oil such as AMSOIL's otherwise the filter will clog up within a few minutes. The petroleum-based oils are so naturally "chunky" that they won't pass through a filtration media as fine as the SDFs.

I personally recommend an AMSOIL dual remote system. That provides filtration of the oil to sub 1-micron levels. Using that system is the equivalent of giving your truck an oil change every 5 minutes!!!!

Again, if you're going to switch to the AMSOIL filters, be sure to switch to AMSOIL oil as well!! They've been making superior lubricants since 1972 and I've had EXCELLENT results with their products.

that almost sounded like a dealer talking... and a brand new user at that....1st post. So anyhow. i've had great luck with motorcraft filters,,,,and i use nothing but valvoline oil. I started trying the high milage valvoline oil,,,the max life, and it has dried up the rear main seap, and the first couple oil changes my oil was real black,,but now its getting cleaner every change,,i do think that the stuffs cleaning out my motor. I haven't actually changed anything in the motor yet,,so i'm not positive,,,but i'd put money on the motor getting cleaner.

Sorry about that!! I get excited when people ask about oil! I do happen to be an AMSOIL dealer and have happened to have learned a LOT about lubricants, both synthetic and petroleum-based. But I'm not trying to sell anyone anything on this forum. He asked what the best filter and oil is for his truck and I believe that the answer is AMSOIL.

I've had great results with their stuff and I've never talked to anyone who's tried their products who hasn't been pleased with their performance. I'm sure there's someone out there somewhere who'll disagree with me, but I haven't met them yet and I talk to literally 100s of people every month about lubricants.

One warning about changing to a synthetic oil on a high mileage engine though -- you may develop leaks!! That's not because there's anything wrong with the synthetic oil, but rather because there's something wrong with petroleum-based oils. . Petroleum-based oils contain parafin and over time that parafin will create a "false seal", probably like what the Valvoline has done in your case. :-)

I don't know about you, but I'd rather flush my engine/rear-end, use an oil that doesn't create false seals and fix the real problem that the false seals have "fixed," rather than wait for the false seals to "let go" at a time that I really don't want them to.

Anyway, enough rambling. I could talk about oil all night. But if you want what I, and many others, feel is the best oil and filter, look into AMSOIL. Please don't contact me looking to buy it, because it seems that might jeopardize my ability to post here in the future. But contact someone about it if you do want the best.

As for that being my first posting, it is my first in a LONG time. I actually joined FTE a while back, I even have the tee shirt!! But I never really received any membership renewal info or anything and I think that they may have been having some "organizational issues" as far as people having enough time to run the site. But I must say, as good as the site was then, this one is a lot better. So, Mr. Forum Monitor, please pass on my compliments to the FTE folks!!

Cheers,

Gryphon
