I envy all of you that own the Excursion... while I enjoy my Explorer, the X is what I long to have in my driveway.

But I have received strong encouragement to avoid ALL gas engines and anything but the 6.9 diesel.

Since I am hoping to pick one up before too terribly long here, I am curious if any of you feel the same way or have other pointers, input or corrections?

Also, what kind of pricing can I expect to be reasonable? I've seen the 04 diesel Limiteds with 100k+ for $14k... is that reasonable?

I love my 5.4, and for the price I couldn't beat it

Depending on what you are going to be using it for you may want to consider a gas. There are lots of V10 owners on here that seem to swear by them. I miss our old 2003 V10 compared to the 6.0 we have now overall.

I would say $14K is a good price. But you need an extra $10K give or take to have the engine more reliable and upgrade suspension. If you know how to turn wrench then cut the price to ~$5K. 6.0 L Diesel isn't as forgiving as the 7.3L

What color is it?

Check out the 6.0L forum and do a lot of reading before jumping in to a 6.0L.

Get the 7.3 if you want excellent fuel economy lots of power and really reliable engine then it's my first choice. Owned a 6.0 excursion that was a nightmare. Had a 5.4 excursion that was way too slow and underpowered.

I'm a very happy V-10 owner here, I tow heavy and have pulled nearly every steep part of the East without complaint.

Sorry... my cousin is buying an 83 F250 with the 6.9, so I had 6.9 on the brain.

I was a heavy equipment mechanic for a few years before I left that gig and went into technology... I know my way around a shop and there's not much I wouldn't tear into... I know I can rely on my mechanical fundamentals and places like this with amazing people for details.

You guys are awesome.

I don't actually have The One picked out yet... but there are always a few available in my area at any given point in time. I am hoping to have one before the end of the winter, but time will tell.

Damn I love the internet... you always get plenty of variety in the responses to any given question.

So I guess what I'm hearing is that it really depends from truck to truck... a well-cared-for 5.4 may be great, but it's possible to get one that sucks. What I'm really hearing is that I need to get out there and drive a bunch of them before I actually pick the one I want.

That's pretty much exactly the advice I was looking for!

the 6.8 V10 is very reliable with pretty good power, my only diesel choice would be a 7.3.

that said i have had 3 V10's and love them all!

My 7.3 is all rainbows and unicorns until the temperature drops below freezing, then it's just OK. The fuel economy goes down the toilet, and it takes forever to warm up. I drove 5 miles before my engine reached operating temperature yesterday. I've never experienced the V10 but depending on how far north you live it may be something to consider. I drive my wife's car a lot more in the winter, in the summer the only time I drive it is when she needs gas.

I have driven an x with all four powerplants and the 5.4 is barely enough if you tow nothing, the v10 is my personal choice, 7.3 is byfar the better of the diesels unless you get a 6.0 that has been "bullet proofed". Just my opinions. Good luck!

I've owned 3 modular ford engines ( 2x 4.6 and the current 6.8) and both 4.6's I sold with over 150k miles and both were running fine... my current 6.8 has 160k miles and it's still running perfect other than a couple broken exhaust manifold studs.

It's terrible on gas but if you gotta pay to play.
