c6 grinding in reverse

1987 f250 c6 grinding when shifting from park to reversewithout engaging. This occurred on arather steep incline. It was thennoticed that it would not lock into park (acted like neutral). Truck was then driven 60 ft. to levelground. At this point reverse worked withoutgrinding. Truck was in 4 low the wholetime.
Background:
A large clunk with resistance had been observed when goingfrom park to reverse on a steep incline during the last snow season.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Truck would slip out of reverse when backing up on anincline with the shifter indicator not synched up (reverse was really somewherebetween R and N)<o></o>

Previous worked performed:
New cab mounts were installed and this fixed the shifterindicator problem<o></o>

Conclusion:
I had the truck towed to a tranny shop since I have no timeto troubleshoot this. It started “working” when I was positioning it to the tow truck (of course). What does this sound like? Tranny or transfercase (both)?<o></o>

Would raising the cab back to its correct position have causedthis? <o></o>

Since you were parked on a steep incline in Park...most likely without the park brake set cause it doesn't work, and no one uses it on automatics.....all that stress was on the Park Pawl of the transmission.

Taking it out of Park with alot of stress on it, will do that massive CLUNK that can sound like a grind as well depending how bad it was.

Try avoiding doing that, you can damage the Park pawl and you'll end up not having Park anymore. Your lucky it started working again.

This has nothing to do with the transmission in terms or the transfer case, you might just end up not having Park anymore.

Even if you have an automatic truck....doesn't mean you don't need the park brake, always set it when your parked on a hill or any incline, cause if you don't use it, you loose it.

A broken parking pawl makes sense for the loss of park but how would it cause constant grinding in reverse (without moving)?

Maybe the small park pawl lever inside the transmission broke off, or a chunk broke off, now it's loose inside the transmission, rubbing on something when in reverse causing that grind?

I'd be scared death of that, problem started right after you replaced the mounts moved the cab?

Sounds like all it needed was the linkage re adjusted make up for it, its not a cable like later models use.

87' it's link rods/pivot point and where the cab sits in relation to the frame will effect shifter adjustment, especially the front cab mounts, change the distance adjust the linkage equal amount.......better yet just start over from scratch.

They are saying its the transfer case. Unless I'm mistaken the 4wd shift lever goes directly to the transfer case and does not attach to the cab therefore the raising of the cab "should" not have effected it.

Conclusion

Transfer case was never fully engaged in 4wheel. Finally slipped and stripped out gears. Bottom line: check your linkage to ensure full engagement.
