Go with the FE and stroke it to 390 or 410 CID. The FE has a cool factor that the Windsor never will, plus no other Ford power plant sounds as good as a healthy FE breathing through some long tubes.
As far as price is concerned, the Windsor will need a pair of aftermarket heads to make any real power. The factory iron FE heads on the other hand should have no trouble supporting a bit north of 400 HP with a decent valve job. I bet you'd spend about the same on a 351W as you would on a 390FE if your waiting to make 300 HP or more.
The big reason the 360s were so doggy is it uses 390 4v pistons with the 352 crank and rods. This makes the piston sit way down from the deck at TDC and produces a compression ratio that's no even 8:1.
I do agree with the cool factor of a 390 I put one in a mustang and it was awesome. You can buy a set of 351w alum heads on eBay for $549 or a set of gt40 for not to bad. Just don't build a 360!
Gt40 heads won't support much more then 300 HP and those aluminum import heads from eBay are JUNK! If your looking for a budget head for the Windsor, look into darts iron eagles.
Well the 360 is completely out of question now. Finally went to check it out. Was NOT as described by owner. I was pretty much disgusted. I'll leave it at that. Come summer time I'll be looking more into the 351W. There has been far more votes towards the 351W anyway. I was thinking earlier and it's gonna be sad to rip out my baby's 302 power plant. I was thinking of sticking her in my 85 Stang. Any of you guys have any thoughts or experience on stroking it to a 347? Maybe even 331 I believe that's what it is. I just don't want to get rid of it completely. I become extremely attached to anything related to this truck. I've always had the idea of stroking the 302 to a 347 since I got the truck my freshman year of high school. I've heard good and bad on it though
