Greetings. I am in search of some info about some problems with my 2000 X. First, I have 42,000 miles on the vehicle and have had the warped rotors replaced 3 times. Of course, they were done free of charge because they do not last very long before having to be replaced.
Second, I have just discovered that my right ball joints and BOTH hubs are trashed already. The dealership claims that towing has caused the problem. The suv was purchased with towing capabilities, so I was shocked to learn that towing a small trailer would create a problem on a heavy duty vehicle. Of course, Ford will not fix the problem for free cos Im out of warrenty. After complaining to the Ford service department, I got nowhere, so Im checking around to see if I can pursue this complaint further. Any ideas??

Welcome to Excursion ownership. Probably the most frustrating thing about the truck. It's par for the course on these trucks. Look into aftermarket rotors (ART) and do not let ANYONE put your wheels back on with an impact wrench!

It's not a towing problem, it is more of a shock and tire pressure problem. Stock shocks, limited suspension, plus over inflated tires make the road imperfections go straight to the ball joints.
The ESOF hubs are a hit or miss too. "Exercise them" (meaning: use them) every now and then.
Thanks for the info, Monsta. After I posted, I received a call from the dealership telling me that a sealed bearing went bad, and the axle was also effected. Anyhow..I have worked a deal out with service, because Im out of warrenty, and they now realize that towing didnt cause the problem. Thanks for the tip on the rotors. Even though I am out of warrenty, they are fixing the rotors and most of the bearing related problems at no charge.
