My speedometer bounces when driving and hit a small bump. To be clear it is not the type of bounce due to a sticking cable-I have experienced that before and have since lubed the cable and solved that problem.
This is a bounce that changes the needle about 3-5 mph and its typically present when the needle is past 12 o'clock or past 45 mph. Its like the bounce is caused by the gravity when the needle is horizontal or close to it and I hit a small bump in the road. Its not a big problem except that if I have the cruise control set then the throttle reacts to the apparent speed change.
My question is this... Is this normal and were these trucks like that when new OR is my cable too soft or fatigued and in need of replacement?
The speed control works off a signal generator driven by the speedo cable. Somewhere between the signal generator and the transmission is probably where your problem is. The cable housing could be kinked a bit or getting pinched by something when the suspension moves.
Pending on the atmospheric conditions, solar flares, location and RF gain of the speedometer antenna the needle may be susceptible of gravity gyrations.
