Ok, so I was able to get the mirror out of the plastic backing, and peel the heating element off the broken glass. (Only nicked myself once on the glass). I also checked the heating element, and it still works.
The question is, should I go ahead and spend about $15-$20 on glass with no backing from a seller on ebay, and use spray adhesive to attach the heater, or spend the $70 for a mirror with a new element and plastic backer. I would try to pull the glass from my current mirror, but if that broke, I'd be stuck without a drivers side mirror.
Also, does anyone know where I can get the 05-current male square plug Tylus mentioned? I'd rather not have the wires be a permanent connection, in case I have to remove the mirror for some reason.
no, I'd cut the round pigtail off your paddle mirrors. then put that on your new mirrors. heat shrink all the connections and it'll last for years. the connector is inside the door itself, so it won't see much weather
you'll need to run a wire from inside the cab to the mirrors themselves so you can get the blinker/turn signal function. the wire already exists on the new mirrors
Ok, Yeah, that would work. And once the round connector is hooked up to the new tow mirrors, I could even get a separate connector set for the turn signal, marker, and heat, just in case I have to disconnect the mirror again for some reason. Or would it be better just to solder and shrink wrap?
the round connector is good for heat and movement.
you'll need to run wires for the blinker function and running lights. so I'd get another connector for those 2 wires. I cannot forsee ever needing to remove the mirrors again, but weird things happen. You could simply straight wire them with shrink wrap and call it a day
My old 03 came with the stupid little mirrors that only had power glass. Bought tow mirrors that had heat as well and plugged them in, heat worked. 2 years later i bought tow mirrors with the blinker/running light and heat and plugged them in and everything worked. Had a rectangular plug
you did this without having to run any extra wiring at all? That's what I was hoping for. I know that the wiring harness on some vehicle would come the same on a stripped down vehicle, as a fully loaded one, I'm assuming for things to be simple at the factory. I was hoping this would be the same way. Makes life a lot easier.
