Anyone ever winterize their own well with a submersile electrical pump? i was gonna open the line that comes outa the ground, and was wondering if the water will drain back down the well as to not freeze in the line thats not below the frost line.
any ideas if it will drain back? or should i blow air back thru it backwards? could there be a one way valve in the pump itself to not let me do this? i havent tried anything yet.
im not worried about the pump as its way below the ground and unable to be frozen, im worried about the copper pipe that goes thru the slab , maybe i could push some small tubing into it and blow the water out below the permafrost level. its a chicken house im cutting the heat off too for rest of the winter.
Cover the affected area with bales of straw. Enormously effective and cheaper than dirt.
Used to do it at our cabin years ago. Water line never froze again after we started doing it. Had to bury a deceased dog several years back with nearly a foot of frost in the ground. Covered the gravesite about 4 days before the dreaded trip to the vet and when the hole was needed, moved the bales and the earth was as soft as in springtime.
In the spring, use the straw for mulch somewhere on the property.
