If you want to do a resoration, it really depends on the engine condition. If in good condition they are as good as any of the era, if it is worn out or damaged, it can be pretty expensive to rebuild. Parts are available tho. It was Ford's first attempt at an OHV V8, You won't find it to be a powerhouse or very economical, but those attributes weren't very high on the priority list back then when gas was< a quarter a gal, driving more than 20 miles was an excursion and roads weren't meant to be driven at more than 30 MPH.

AX, you're greatly exaggerating! Speed limits outside of municipalities was pretty uniformly 60 in the early '50's. Cars of the early '50's were easily able to cruise all day at 65 - 70 (think Lincoln, Caddy, Olds, Buick, all had large OHV V8's). By the mid-'50's there were plenty of 4-lane US highways, and of course the interstate system soon followed. Plenty of people were commuting more than 20 miles each way to work.
Anyway, the big problem with Y-blocks was that their oil systems plugged with the non-detergent oils of the day, and damage to the rockers and valves resulted. AFAIK they are fine nowadays with our much better oils. But as AX says, it depends what you want out of the truck. You could upgrade the 256 with later Y-block parts, and save the trouble of finding an engine that fits in the doghouse of the COE.
Pre-'56 vehicles are all 6v

Well, we haven't had much coe talk lately. Welcome aboard. FTE is a great place with plenty of experts, as seen from the above replies. The coe's are pretty cool trucks.
I'm one of the "We want pictures!" guys, so please post some up for us.
I'm restoring a 55 239 y-block in my F250, but I haven't done anything more than get it running on a naked frame as of yet.
What are your plans for the truck? For me I'm going pretty much stock and don't plan anything major with it, but I do want to use mine as a truck. If you are going to do light driving and attend shows then I would think about any motor will get the job done. If you are going to make a car hauler and travel the country.....well, you will need make sure that engine is in tip top shape.
Did I mention we want pictures? Take lots of pictures and ask lots of questions. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask that ends up costing you hundreds of dollars.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.
While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
The best photos and videos | Photobucket
Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).
When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).
Your pic will be placed in the post.
Hope that helps.
Here's a tutorial Bob put together: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/67...-pictures.html Bob's link is not working. Can someone in the know tell me why?
