power steering info 75

alright my power steering seems to be a cylinder and a manual gear box. having trouble finding a seal kit for the cylinder, much less a new cylinder. i have emailed lares about rebuilding mine though. Im also considering converting everything to a later syste,. im sure i'll need a new gear box, what else will i need to do the conversion?

How late? I suggest the 78-79 style.
  • Integral PS box
  • Pitman arm
  • T-style drag link
  • T-style tie rods
  • Compatible pressure hose
  • 7° reamer (Speedway Motors, about $70)
  • Grade 8 hardware to mount the box.

Go to the Tech Thread Hyperlink Compilation for threads on swapping to integral PS on a 4x4.

im looking in a lmc catalog right now and it seems like i have a hybrid system comprised of a 75 and 78-79 system. i have the 78-79 pitman arm, i have the 78-79 drag link. whoever put it together was using the garrison inner as the center link between pitman arm and drag link. i can throw my linkage back together and take picture of what it looked like before i took it apart to get a better idea of how it was. ill wait to see what lares quotes me before going any further though. it would be nice just to put it back together how i found it lol. i know this is probably going to get pricey as well

I think I understand what you're describing. The configuration is similar but I wouldn't call it a hybrid. See, the integral PS (76-79 half-ton 4WD) have the PS lines connected directly to the steering box instead of the ram ...and your rig uses manual steering box. Plus, your pitman arm points to the rear... the 76-79 pitman arm points forward.

do you think i could just add the the power steering gear box? it seems like the only difference(excuse me if this is ridiculous im quite ignorant when it comes to automotive work) would be that the center link would really by my garrison valve and they're be an extra steering stablizer, where the cylinder went.

Do you mean in place of the manual box? No. It's works backwards to your manual box - ya'd have to turn left to go right and vice versa. The integral PS would have to be mounted almost against the track bar mount.

I think an option, cheapest, is to convert to manual steering... but it becomes more work to drive than is necessary especially with wider rubber. It might be okay with up to 31-inch rubber.

well i went to see how everything would work, and to my dissappointment my pressure valve wont be able to be used as the center link as i added a 4 inch lift. looks like ill have to go completely to the 78-79, right?

Gotta go all in.

Be advised that the integral PS will line up smack dab with the front crossmember... gotta sleeve the frame for the back two bolts and for the front bolt section the frame for a welded nut or back-fish a bolt and use a nut on the outside.

I read a wile back ago that you could use a chebby 4x4 steering box or even a ford 4x2 steering box.. but with the ford 4x2 you can't go over 35inch tires.

i may just sell some vacation time and buy the benchworks kit. but if im understanding correctly they take the p/s box n reverse the gears? so it fits in the same way my manual one does? if i do that will the 78-79 center link reach the pitman arm since it'll be facing backwards

Dunno about Benchworks' kit..

In one of the links, Crazy used the guts of a 2WD steering gear and swapped certain pieces of it into the 4WD box so it behaves like your manual box so the pitman arm faces aft. ... that eliminates having to sleeve the frame and is a TON easier to do.

Correct.
