Tailpipe question

First, the basics: 09 SCREW 4.6L V8, bone stock, 63K miles.
Over the Thanksgiving holidays I put about 1800 miles on my truck. I've noticed an accumulation of black soot on my tail pipe. Not a lot, but some.
Also, my highway gas mileage is down some, from 21-22 to 20mpg.
My vast experience with engines tells me that my engine may be running rich, which would explain the loss of gas mileage.
I wanted to post a picture, but "You may not post attachments".
Is this something to be concerned about?
Thanks in advance.

You must have followed me, I also did about 1800 miles over Thanksgiving! Questions, did you have the whole family, and generally extra cargo, bags, etc? Were you even just a little bit in a hurry to get to your destination? Were you mostly on 75mph interstates, instead of 60-65mph back roads? Any of those things could cause your MPG to drop 1-2.

Also sounds like maybe you were cleaning some some excess carbon. Realistically though, different fuel blends that went in your tank in different areas are likely the reason to notice some extra carbon.

1 - No luggage, just people, 4 or 5 adults
2 - The major part was a one day, round trip from New Orleans to Memphis. That was a long day.
3 - Most was on I-55 and on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. Speeds were 70-75

I did fill up at different places, so the different blends and additives may have something to do with it. It's not that bad, just noticable.

The people alone will make a difference if you are used to not riding with anybody. I was surprised myself at the difference. Did it go back once you were done with your trip?
