Mileage Meter Question

People seem to call it the Lie-O-Meter. However, In the last month and a half, I have checked it accurately. I fill up till I see the fuel doesn't go down any more by rocking the truck. The worst I got was today when it was off by 4 tenths of a mile. It said 13.8 average mileage and I had a trip meter of 466.0 or 33.7681 gals. I filled up 33.344 gals of fuel which translated to a difference of .4241 mpg which seems close enough considering I am taking it to 4 decimal places while the meter is at 1 decimal place. I have checked mileage based on both highway only, city only and combination.

This is a 01 Excursion with the computer reflashed by Ford to the latest software and it has a 7.3L Powerstroke diesel. Fuel station has been kept constant, changed, etc, etc. Also I have run the tank down to about a quarter tank before fueling up.

so you're asking which one to go with, the truck's dash display or your records? or are you .4241 mpg off the last tank? I'm a little confused.

Just curious as to why people disparage it when the worst I have noticed is that it is pretty close to what I should get.

To some, many, if it is not a "laboratory accurate" reading it is of no use to read. Same with temp gauges and the like. While what ever they install is assumed to be accurate Even though they have no way of knowing if it is or not. Only thing known is that the after market device is different form the factory.

People....

Well, I wouldn't bet my life on it but like I said, if the difference between what I got and should get is not even half a gallon, I would think it would be accurate enough for most purposes I have.

Mine was always pretty accurate. You run into real inaccuracy when you are running a tuner or chip.

I have used the Diablo Predator tuner and DP Tuner chip and they both mess up fuel calculations. I would assume the rest do the same.

Here is my thoughts.... I've had two Excusions. Both with the 6.0L, one was a 2003 and the latest one is a 2004 with a 2003 engine.

Now my first one the 03's over head mileage console was bang on accurate everytime. I would fill up on a long trip and it would show distance to empty of like 838 miles cuz it would average like 19-19.5

The 2004 ... huh ... that sucker has never been right. At a fill up with it showing 17mpg average ... it won't show over 625 miles to empty. Of course my dealer told me it was fine.
