When I started my truck up yesterday to move it I noticed that the amp gauge did not come back up-as though the GPR did not kick off. This was longer than the estimated 2 minutes that it usually takes for it to turn off the GPs. I then reved it a little to see if it would come up. The most it would come up is basically pointing straight down which is not normal for my truck. I also noticed an "electrical" type smell. I shut the truck off and let it sit until about 4pm today. Turned the key and the gauge bottomed out, waited for Wait to Start to go out and it turned over slow but fired pretty easily (45* outside). Batteries are a year old so I don't think that is the problem and I got right up on the ALT and am convinced that is where the smell is coming from. How do I take the GPR out of the system to determine if the Alt is going or the GPR is not shutting off? I am an electrical kindergartner so details will help!
From your description sounds like the alternator is toast. You can disconnect either big lug connection from the GPR and that will disable the GPR for testing purposes.
Thanks Jim. I am going to get the alt tested. Wanted to make sure it would not hurt the GPs if the GPR was the problem. It is supposed to be 60* here today so I will take the GPR out of the system and see if it gets better etc. I think the burning smell off the alt tells me what I need to know though.
