Paying a shop to change gears is crazy expensive. Either find a friend to do it or teach yourself. I swapped to 3.73s with no experience, but I spent a ton of time researching and watching videos on how to do it.
dclack did you swap from 4.10's for 3.55's? Did you source your 3.73s new or used and if used the from a SD?
Yeah, you can just send pull the gears out and send them via flat rate boxes for cheap, but then you have to get them setup properly. The majority of that 2k quote you got from the shop is labor charges.
I see that you have 3.73's. Those would probably be better for me since I have bigger tires? Kinda best of both worlds I guess. What did it cost ya if you don't mind me asking?
Keerap forgot to ask what tire and rims size you are running too. Great to know that we are able to install used SD gear sets as I have asked else where and never got a clear answer.
So thinking the drivability is much better/broader power band running what you have. I know with my red sig truck I went from 4.10's to 3.55's with Auto to ZF-5 (with 35" tires) and I really like it for a DD, especially after a 1.0 A/R install. To tow (occasionally) heavy thinking the 3.73's would be awesome set up with what i'm thinking for my new to me ECSB when I swap a D60 into it (it's a 4X2 currently) with only +- 40K miles on it!
What are your driving impressions 4.10 versus 3.73's.
I have 315/75/16's too. I really love the 3.73s for DD and occasional towing. I only paid $120 for the gear sets via eBay and a junk yard back East. You can reuse your bearings if they're in good condition, but you must change the inner pinion bearing for the rear to match the 10.5" gear set.
Well I'm really considering swapping to 3:55 gears. I currently have 4:10's. I don't tow very often and would like to be able to cruise at 75mph without running this thing at or over 2500 rpms. Would I get netter fuel economy with the gear swap. I have a zf5 and 315:75/r16 tires. Cruising at 65mph and at 2200rpms I'm getting about 14mpgs. Truck weighs right at 9k lbs. good idea? Bad idea?

Cool thanks for the info will keep an eye out for a set of 3.73's. My latest truck came with an older 25ft 5th wheel Kustom Coach travel trailer which my darlin wants to keep (have sold the other 23 TT) and the intent is to use the White/silver ECSB to tow the 5'er with, plus use as a DD.
I'll either sell the Red one or perhaps keep it as a work truck pending how the conversion works out the White/silver one.
