Does the 9 mean it's a 9 inch rear end? If so, I have a question: I've got a leak coming from the rear end. Is the pinion seal inside the differential? I'm not sure what the seal is called that is leaking. It's the seal that is visible on the outside, nearest the driveshaft. Is this something to be concerned with?
Another question: I was looking in my Chiltons manual. What is the main difference between the 8.8 axle and the 9 axle? Is the 9 able to handle heavier loads? Any info would help.
I've searched old threads already, but I didn't get any answers.
If someone could decode the rest of the tag, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Yes, the "9" means it's a 9", which is a TOTALLY different axle from the 8.8". The 9 is known to be a strong axle, but the 8.8 is just as strong - maybe more. Yes, that would be the pinion seal, and it shouldn't be too difficult to change, but I'm not familiar with the 9. You might find more info in a Haynes manual.
The rest of the bottom line is the build date(October 2, 1976 I think), and the top line is the bill of materials.
Be careful when changing the seal. The nut that holds the assembly together also sets the tension in the pinion bearings. Mark the position of the nut carefully so you can get it back in the original spot to avoid messing up the pinion bearing preload.
