I have a 1979 F-600. When I bought the truck I was told it had had a 460 swapped in to replace the stock 370. The valve covers say it is a 370. Without tearing the motor apart is there any easy way to ID which motor it is? I need to get a vacuum advance for the distributor.

Also what are the timing specs for a 79 460 and 370. I don't have any info for the 460 and the sticker is barely readable if it is a 370.

Thanks
Le

What are the casting codes on the block and heads?

Where are the block codes located? I'd like to avoid pulling the valve covers if possible.

Look above the starter. You may need to use a wire brush to knock the gunk off of it to see it.

What should the codes be for 460 and 370?

Thanks

The code on the block above the starter is

B9TE-BB

The first character was hard to make out but it appeared to be a B.

Intake D9TE-EA
Could not find head codes

370 valve covers bolt up to the heads and it took 8-1/2 quart of oil for the oil change.

Well if there aren't any codes on the heads where I said that isn't a 460.

Now, Because it was designed in 79, I would say it is a another version of a 351M or 400

How many valve cover bolts are there ?

Considering it is considerably bigger than any small block I've ever seen including the old Chrysler 318 polysphere (wide blocks) I don't think it is a 351M or 400.

I also am certain it is not a FE.

There are 7 bolts holding the valve cover on.

No codes under the valve covers except for the standard mold numbers. The only thing unusual was a large M over a C within a C. I went over the sides of the heads with a mirror, It's a little hard to stand on the bumper and hang upside down to get a direct look at them, and there were no stamps on the side of the heads. If there were any on the ends they are behind the brackets.

For all I know they are not stock heads. The person who supposidly swapped motors has done some hotrodding in the past. He may have used a motor he had on hand with aftermarket heads.

Here's one for you. Is it possible it is a 430 or 462? I haven't seen one in a while but it is a possibility with a B9TE casting code.

OK I stand corrected. I ran the casting code through google and it came up with a 391 FT motor. Figure that one out.

That's where I was heading once you replied with valve cover bolts.

The 391 was used in 79

Talking Engine ID

I thought I posted this an hour ago. It must have gotten lost in the e-mail.

The motor is actually a 370. The original owner had a 460 that he was going to swap in but didn't. What I got from the person I bought the truck from was that it had been swapped.

Thanks for all the help.
