What would be better to use TQ straps or chain to keep my engine from rocking back and forth. I was thinking about making a 3 inch thick web strap and a mounting bracket on the front of my heads, then conect theose to the frame on each side. I really don't like how much my engine shakes at idle. But hey my old dog can run! I took it out for a spin when after I installed my secondary valve springs. Wow is all I can say. It's nice to have all that power under my foot.
Mark,
Normally a TQ-strap is only needed on the drivers side of the engine as the rotation under throttle is to the right or clock-wise when looked at from the drivers seat. On my 660 HP Corvette I use a simple piece of chain with a forged turn-buckle to give me some adjustment. Too tight and it will feel as if you have solid engine mounts (not good), too loose and the TQ-strap won't stop rotation. With the turn-buckle in the middle you can make fine adjustments to get it set just right.
Mine is connected from the frame to the back of the head.
One last note: double check your engine/tranny mounts...one of them could possibly be broken.
Deen
I'm with Deen, Airharley - I attach to the driver side with a turnbuckle, too.
Years ago drag racing C-modified (and on the streets) with a built 454 I used the same thing in my '57 Tudor - worked like a charm.... Keep those pix coming...
Actually when the engine is above idle she is very smooth. Not rocking back and forth. It's the ilde that is keeping me from being able to hook up an exhuast system. And the mounts are all brand new. I checked those last night before going to bed. I was mainly looking for delamination in the rubber, nothing found. I do know that the passenger side is the one that is raising up. I was thinking of actually using a cargo strap that has a rating of 1500 lbs. We use these things to hold damn near anything. Heck, I have even straightened a friends frame using one of these things. That way I can adjust the tension that is on it and simply release it is need be without bolts or a turn buckle. I was thinking about using one of those tie down chains I used to hold Bunny to the trail when I picked her up from your house Mark. But that is way over kill. The strap will allow for a little stretch and flexability.
