I just bought a used 1997 F150 XLT 4x4, 4.2L V6, automatic transmission, lever operated 4WD, 100,000 miles...
I was toying with the 4WD system in my driveway, and was able to go from 2H to 4H, to 4L, but now I'm stuck in 4L (4x4 Low Range).
Following the instructions, I step on the brake, place the gearshift lever into N, and move the transfer case shift lever from 4L to 4H, and then to 2H... the transfer case shift lever seems happy the move to all positions, but the light still indicates 4x4 Low Range. A short tip down the road confirms that I'm in 4L although the transfer case shift lever is in the 2H position (as near as I can tell).
Any suggestion about how to get unstuck would be appreciated (otherwise I'm headed back to the dealer).
Normal operation is the "give it heck method" in any manual shift transfer cases I have ever dealt with. If the giving it heck does not work, try checking to see if any exposed linkage under the truck is moving. Sounds like your shifter may not have a solid link to the transfer case.
After extensively trying the "give it heck method" (which may have caused the problem in the first place), I took your next suggestion and checked the linkage... it turns out that linkage was unlinked. Where the shift linkage is supposed to connect to the transfer case, a worn rubber bushing (?) allowed the connection between the two to separate. I was able to temporarily align the linkage connection long enough to get back into 2WD mode (2H). This looks trivial to fix if I can get a new rubber bushing.
