Correct concept, but you need to pull it off the spark plug and NOT the distributor cap. Spark plugs don't supply power, the coil does....

sorry guys forgot to post my findings here. Turns out that the wire that goes between the coil and the distributor cap had gone bad and had a bad connection at one end of the wire. Guess thats the last time I'll ever buy those el cheapo wires!
